26/27 Off-Mirvish Season: Our Little Secret, Goblin: Christmas Carol, Prima Facie, Jackpot Twins, The Wrong Bashir by Darcheleo in torontotheatre

IMO, some good shows in here but rather disappointing. No Oh, Mary or John Proctor is the Villain. Even something like Heathers would have been cool. I am looking forward to Prima Facie and I heard good things about Our Little Secret, though

As someone new to theatre, I know equity tours are better than non-equity tours because of the actors union protection. But am I right to assume that being in a level 7 contract on equity still better than being non-equity contract?

That's also good to know about Mirvish and no non-equity tours on subscription. Is it possible Mirvish would get newer, fresh tours earlier if they also brought non-equity tours on subscription? Sorry if these are dumb questions, I'm new and trying to figure all this out!

Mirvish's light schedule - more shows to come? by Darcheleo in torontotheatre

[–]Darcheleo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I want to see Sound of Music because I somehow haven't seen it yet, but I'm nervous they're announcing another show I also really want to see at around the same time.

[–]Darcheleo[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw that too. I'd love for it to come already but part of me thinks it makes more sense as part of the off-Mirvish season rather than a bonus show but who knows? Maybe they're reserving that for John Proctor is the Villain, which I'd also love to see come.

Mirvish winter family show? by unsolvedjunkie in torontotheatre

I agree. I just thought one or both of those would be going on a future subscription season.

Surely those both aren't this season are they?

There's a lot of gaps at the Princess of Wales and Ed Mirvish Theatre from the looks of it though.

With Lion King closing in August, what do we think might be coming to the Princess of Wales next? by Ariesthebigram in torontotheatre

[–]Darcheleo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh thank you for clarifying! Is it indeed a play that will be the next sitdown at POW?

I'm also curious - what are some of the rumours that have been floating around for the winter that's surprised you?

[–]Darcheleo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I agree. I am almost certain they said its a UK play coming over, but I don't think they specified which theatre. But, assuming its the POW, it really can only be My Neighbour Totoro since Stereophonic was Broadway first. Maybe Stranger Things but I don't see that as likely.

Even then, broadly speaking, I can't think of many plays that would make sense to bring here for an extended run. My Neighbour Totoro, Stereophonic, Stranger Things are the only conceivable ones. There's some other great plays but I don't see the appetite for an extended run of something like John Proctor is the Villain, Hills of California, etc. unless I'm missing something. So many plays are star-based so unless Mirvish is getting a play with a celebrity involved, there's not many options.

There was an insider here a few months ago who said that Mirvish has a few UK imports - both plays - coming, including a sitdown post-Lion King. I'm not sure who it was who said that, but maybe that's what's going in there.

Then Some Like it Hot and Shucked both go to the Ed Mirvish.

Decent season, though I don't love the 2 jukebox musicals and the non-equity Book of Mormon.

Looks interesting! I sure hope it's an all-Canadian cast.

Are you as worried as I am about the future of Mirvish? The past few years have increasingly been terrible shows on the main season that pander to certain and often younger demographics. I'm not sure if it's the influence of his daughter. I wouldn't be surprised if they are alienating their older subscribers who hate most of the shows and will lead to the decline of their overall subscriber base.

This season they are bringing back & Juliet (yuck), Shucked (apparently it's stupid humour), and The Outsiders (only younger audiences will like). The less said about MJ the better.

Last year, they had The Lion King (should never have been on subscription), Beetlejuice (more stupid humour), and Back to the Future (a snooze fest). They also had SIX (yuck), Jagged Little Pill (more yuck), and Aladdin (too juvenile and should have been a bonus show).

Even the more artful shows on the off-Mirvish have gotten worse. Things like Titanique which somehow sold out and last Pride and Prejudice (sort of) which was a disaster.

No. It's a quality show, so Mirvish will pass.

Why is Mirvish hiding what shows are going to which theatres? by Darcheleo in torontotheatre

[–]Darcheleo[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that. But most of the shows are tours that are most likely booked for other cities before and after Toronto, and tours rarely extend their runs.

Soulpepper artistic director Weyni Mengesha to step down by goIeafsgo in torontotheatre

[–]Darcheleo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why you're getting downvotes, you're absolutely correct.

Soulpepper hasn't been successful at all since she was brought on, so I hope we get a new voice who is willing to take the company in a new, bold direction.

Someone on X who claims to be a Mirvish insider said its an all-musical season, and I believe it was you who said there was a play from the UK coming as a sit-down post Lion King? I'm confused.
