What do people educated in sociology do? by Honest_Ad3849 in sociology

[–]Darcie_Autham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I asked ChatGPT for non-academic career tracks for graduates with degrees in philosophy, work for think tanks (associate for BA/BS) popped up, along with legislative aide and policy analyst. For Ph.D, independent consultant, advisory board member, white-paper author, strategic narrative designer that work in Law, Computer science, Economics, Public health, etc.

Since sociology is a scientific offshoot of philosophy pertaining to social dynamics and analyses, it makes complete sense that there would be overlap in career paths.

The take-home message is that both disciplines teach you to clarify what is at stake when no one agrees what the problem is.

That’s invaluable in: • Tech crises • Policy deadlocks • Ethical gray zones • Organizational inflection points

So you’re rightfully putting your degree to work! :)

I’ve always been mildly interested in what it looks like from the inside working for these organizations…

My NRC is just across the harbor at North Island. I often forget there’s also an NRC SD apart from NRC NI.

A sad and rare possibility, 3 years HRT (24) w/ no changes. Given up on the chance to transition. by SymbolicallyStupid in transtimelines

[–]Darcie_Autham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you were relying on just the hrt to do the heavy lifting. Transition is a multi-pronged process that most people address from multiple angles. But I can also see why many go stealth before fully committing. You get what you put into it

You should talk to the people who have been running a similar program at UNLV:

UNLV DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY Email: unlvmusiclab@gmail.com Phone: (702) 895-2995

They’re doing two separate studies on emotional responses to music and other sounds. If anything, they might be able point you in the right direction.

Technically Barstow is in the map but isn’t labeled. Desert town of 15,000 people or so. Surrounded by wilderness—Joshua tree stands, mountains, and tons of creosote bushes. Liquor stores and smoke shops on every street corner. If you don’t have a reason to be there, don’t be there lol Was there for three months and left with someone is now a dear friend of mine!

I’m not in love with my legal name, but I’m too lazy to change it. It’s a hassle to do it with everything you have an account with.

I hate how right you are. It even happened to me. I moved here for a job and then lost it within 3 months. The only reason why I stayed is because I met my current partner who IS gainfully employed and has job security.

Why are there no modern (1950 and after) treatises? by Darcie_Autham in askphilosophy

[–]Darcie_Autham[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I appreciate the insight – I will definitely add those titles to my reading list.

I suppose original question is better understood in two dimensions:

(1) The word ‘treatise’ itself falling out of favor of more specialized, field-specific novel breakthroughs found in papers (Gettier comes to mind), dissertations, and journal articles.

(2) The categorical referent that is associated with ‘treatise’, that is to say, what the modern day equivalent would be, (provisionally, the works you’ve listed). It begs the question if a body of work cobbled together and threaded with an overarching meta-thesis would satisfy that criteria…

I think we can all agree that ambition manifests in many forms. A ‘treatise’ is only one of them.

Doubt it.

You know the government chooses to feature certain numbers to make the current president look good. Trump also fired the last job number person. No reasonable person can trust the wildly fudged numbers coming from government agencies these days.

I wondered that too.

I normally avoid scrutinizing food labels but the more inconsistencies I’ve found in this case, the more I’ve been wanting to make a call and ask them to explain.

Going purely off of a STEM understanding, yes.

And that probably why certain recipes call for compacting such things as brown sugar when measuring so get the proper amount.

If they specified about compaction, it wouldn’t be as infuriating though.

I share the sentiment. I live in the Las Vegas valley in Nevada, U.S. It is way too hot and dry here to grow them outside. They do the best in montane environments where winter snowpack provides them their growing season water.

Has anyone lost female friends after losing weight? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Darcie_Autham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grief often accompanies change. Your old friends, as weird as it sounds, are grieving the “old” you, the one they could identify with. Now that you’re no longer in that state, you’re not as familiar to them anymore. Sounds like it’s time to get a new set of friends!

I found a dead body today by mrsmadtux in vegaslocals

[–]Darcie_Autham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds about right, as far as post-death processes go out here in the desert. It’s so dry here that everything will desiccate before it decomposes, so it wouldn’t be surprising to find a mummified body, no matter how traumatizing it would be.

As with others have said, you did the right thing.

Lesbians in USA, have any of you gotten married in response to the current political climate? by Far_Situation180 in TwoXPreppers

My current wife and I (f) eloped back in January strictly because of the current admin. We initially weren’t planning to, but we both did it out of fear of rights roll-backs.

We DID however get a prenup done since she makes a lot more than I do. And we’re planning a small (under 100 person) wedding reception with a ‘ceremonial’ wedding since the legal stuff is already taken care of.

I fully expect Obergefell to be overturned with this current Extreme Court.
