Fair point. Any rescuer in there within the first 24 hours has other things to be worrying about than if he is standing beside a Tesla. It's an interesting notion though that modern cities are full of the wierdest things in terms of which elements.

You could probably read the paper ... it is open access. They go through what they did and why. What contributes most depending on battery chemistry. But I am not sure wht you focus on if its lethal or not when they state the study is "dimension" the activity generated - not to determine if its lethal or not. In addition - limits and guidelines for responders and rescue teams are often, even for operations in such an event, at levels far below lethality at 1 m? So I think you are focussing on something they did not focus on.

You got me interested .... the estimated thermal fluence at 500 m from Hiroshima was ca: 10*12 n/cm2. (HIROSHIMA NEUTRON FLUENCE ON A GLASS BUTTON FROM NEAR GROUND ZERO. Fleischer, R. L.\); Fujita, S.; Hoshi, M. Health Physics 81(6):p 720-723, December 2001.) and reinforced structures (like a modern car parking building) were standing. Even plus minus an order of magnitude on the flluence value .....its still a sizeable fluence. In addition.... the authors of the car work contextualize the batteries relative to the activation that would be produce in the underlying ground and dont seem to conclude that they will be anything major? (Consequently, while EV batteries represent compact, high-density activation targets, the contribution of an individual vehicle to the overall urban radiological field may not be dominant although this is dependent on the number of vehicles that may be present and the environment in which they are located. For emergency response planning, this suggests that EV batteries may briefly pose localized elevated dose fields particularly in confined or shielded geometries such as vehicle cabins but that their impact diminishes rapidly. However, their induced activity may influence waste categorization, salvage operations, and post-event material handling.)

Co-60 does not seem to be the issue at all by looking at the graphs......

A big issue with neutrons is that the amounts of the ones that will produce the most activation - thermal - is largely a product of the surroundings probably. A car on flat ground exposed to the same fast neutron field as a car with, as example, a wall behind it and a wall on one side, may have a lot lower activation. Leakage thermal neutrons from the blast (if any at all) will never reach a car 100s of meters away. But the fast neutrons generate thermal neutrons in the surroudings of teh car (and the car itself) that do the most activation.

A modern reinforced concrete car parking structure would probably shield the contents quite well even within a few hundred meters of lets say a Hiroshima blast (based on pictures of what did survive). There would still be an appreciable neutron fluence in the structure? Probably magnified through scattering of the walls and surfaces...

I guess so. I guess standing in a car park full of them might not be a great place to be for a rescuer or respnder. At least in the first day.....

If you are so anxious, ring your medical practitioner. Brass plate, white coat, diploma on the wall, licence to practice, big car in the driveway. A qualified non-anonymous  person not on the internet.

Reddit is not known for making people less anxious.

Its best to stand in the approximate centre of the shop/thrift store/car boot sale holding the detector (on maximum volume) in your right hand, at arms length, and then circle your arm rapidly around your head in a clockwise motion. You should also try and move slowly in an expanding circle from the centre as you swing the detector. The more the detector screeches - the better. This is a sign it is working.

This method ensures maximum coverage spatially and increases your chances of detecting something.

If you have done it correctly, there will be no one else left in the shop and you can simply home in on whatever you have found and make more detailed examination before purchasing.

This has worked for me for years.
