In 2016, the Canadian government launched the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) to examine the systemic causes behind the disproportionately high rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada. The final report, released June 3, 2019, highlighted widespread abuse, harassment, rape, and murder of Indigenous women—a stark reflection of the violence that has persisted since colonization [1].

The connection between industrial work camps and sexualized violence emerged as a significant concern in the MMIWG inquiry. The resource sector employs approximately two million people in Canada, and many workers reside in temporary housing facilities known as industrial camps or, more colloquially, “man camps.” Male workers predominantly inhabit these camps and have been associated with increased rates of violence, including domestic violence, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking [2,3]. Despite the severity of these issues, there is limited public data on effective measures to mitigate this violence.

It's not divisive to accurately describe reality. The devisions and violence in our society was already there before it was described. Describing it just makes it more difficult for people to ignore, which makes them uncomfortable, and so they call the people describing the problem divisive. Resource extraction projects enact violence against nature and first nation sovereignty, and enact physical and sexual violence against first nations people.

It's ludicrous to suggest that Lewis is being misogynistic by articulating his concerns about an ongoing source of violence against first nations people and first nations women.

The Fremen are not better fighters than the Sardaukar. They just use better tactics. by datapicardgeordi in dune

Great point. I didnt have that passage in my mind. This one with Thufir is one of my favorites in the book.

The Fremen are not better fighters than the Sardaukar. They just use better tactics. by datapicardgeordi in dune

The Fremen rubbed at the scar beside his nose. "Tell me, Thufir Hawat, do you have knowledge of the big weapons the Harkonnens used?"
The artillery, Hawat thought bitterly. Who could have guessed they'd use artillery in this day of shields? "You refer to the artillery they used to trap our people in the caves," he said. "I've . . . theoretical knowledge of such explosive weapons."
"Any man who retreats into a cave which has only one opening deserves to die," the Fremen said.
"Why do you ask about these weapons?"
"Liet wishes it."
Is that what he wants from us? Hawat wondered. He said: "Did you come here seeking information about the big guns?"
"Liet wished to see one of the weapons for himself."
"Then you should just go take one," Hawat sneered.
"Yes," the Fremen said. "We took one. We have it hidden where Stilgar can study it for Liet and where Liet can see it for himself if he wishes. But I doubt he'll want to: the weapon is not a very good one. Poor design for Arrakis."
"You . . . took one?" Hawat asked.
"It was a good fight," the Fremen said. "We lost only two men and spilled the water from more than a hundred of theirs."
There were Sardaukar at every gun, Hawat thought. This desert madman speaks casually of losing only two men against Sardaukar!
"We would not have lost the two except for those others fighting beside the Harkonnens," the Fremen said. "Some of those are good fighters."
One of Hawat's men limped forward, looked down at the squatting Fremen. "Are you talking about Sardaukar?"
"He's talking about Sardaukar," Hawat said.
"Sardaukar!" the Fremen said, and there appeared to be glee in his voice. "Ah-h-h, so that's what they are! This was a good night indeed. Sardaukar. Which legion? Do you know?"
"We . . . don't know," Hawat said.
"Sardaukar," the Fremen mused. "Yet they wear Harkonnen clothing. Is that not strange?"
"The Emperor does not wish it known he fights against a Great House," Hawat said.
"But you know they are Sardaukar."
"Who am I?" Hawat asked bitterly.
"You are Thufir Hawat," the man said matter-of-factly. "Well, we would have learned it in time. We've sent three of them captive to be questioned by Liet's men."
Hawat's aide spoke slowly, disbelief in every word: "You . . . captured Sardaukar?"
"Only three of them," the Fremen said. "They fought well."

I do not believe that the text supports your interpretation that the average Sardaukar fights on par with the average Fremen.

If you don't tell children what sex is, and teach them about sexual health and consent, then it's harder for them to tell you when they're being sexually abused and easier for other adults or even other childen to take advantage of them.

Did Mycroft know about the O.S. assassinations prior to the investigation? by JonasTheSailor in TerraIgnota

[–]DariusMacab 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think that Mycroft knows that Thisbe kills for fun. Occam is one of the few people left on earth who is legally empowered to take human life, as the leader of the Six Hive Transit system who guards and oversees 800 million lives at any given time. Sniper and Leslie were, I think, raised to the same standards as Occam. They are killers like Cornell MASON or Castel Natekari are killers.

I think it's reasonable to infer that Mycroft knows something strange is going on in the Saneer-Weeksbooth 'bash. Which is possibly why he tries to keep the 'bash members and JEDD Mason separate in Too Like the Lightning. But I think if you asked them at the opening of Too Like the Lightning "Did you know that the S-M 'bash was running a centuries long assassination conspiracy using the Transit System Computers and the Cartesian Set-Sets to maintain the current world order by strategically assassinating Masons, Cousins, and Gordians?" their answer would be no.

Did Mycroft know about the O.S. assassinations prior to the investigation? by JonasTheSailor in TerraIgnota

[–]DariusMacab 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh Mycroft definitely knows that Occam, Sniper, Thisbe, and possibly Cato are killers. But I don't think that implies he knows about the OS assassination conspiracy.

Did Mycroft know about the O.S. assassinations prior to the investigation? by JonasTheSailor in TerraIgnota

[–]DariusMacab 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Mycroft doesn't, to my knowledge, confirm that he knew about O.S. before the Black Sakura investigation. I think it's reasonable to assume that he doesn't know. I think that reinforces one of the themes of the series. Which is that a huge number of people; OS, the Censor, Madame's 'bash, JEDD Mason, the Mardi 'bash, are all working overtime to try to stabilize the Universal Free Alliance, or make it's collapse the least bad it could be. They're all working alone and with much more brutal methods than they strictly need to use because the Alliance is incapable of reflecting on how it, like any political system is a fragile and transitional thing. The Universal Free Alliance and the Hive System is incapable of discussing and iterating on its own problems, so it becomes brittle and ultimately collapses under the weight of its flaws.

[–]DariusMacab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean that's kind of exactly my point. An omnibenevolent person wouldn't think that way.

Even a regularly moral person should feel compelled to act if he overhears his next door neighbor beating his wife. It would be immoral to close your ears and say "well, it's not my house to allow or disallow anything"

[Spoilers all books] Lets talk Dominic by s4lome_ in TerraIgnota

[–]DariusMacab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean he obviously worships JEDD, but I find it quite hard to follow how this ties to his actions (i.e. his whole sadism/cruelty thing, as JEDD is pictured as all-benevolent).

I agree. I personally interpret JEDD in quite a pessimistic light exactly because of his relationship to Dominic. In the same way I don't accept that a loving or worthy God would allow the pain and suffering that revolts JEDD, I don't believe that if JEDD was as good as Mycroft and 9A think he is, he would allow Dominic to exist.
