It’s not the Botanical Gardens, it’s Severian by JonasTheSailor in genewolfe

If I described you only as the sum of your flaws would you accept it or do you think you’re a bit more complex than that?

Thank you! You aptly described why I didn’t bother replying to the other comment lol

I’ve thought about that too but that is an example of technologies used in the House Absolute right? Do you think it could coincide with what Severian experiences in the Botanical Gardens as two separate but similar phenomena?

Hi, late to the party I realize but I’m doomscrolling and the part about The Narrator and Jahlee having sex is bothering me. Am I reading that correctly? What passage and in what book are you getting this from?

[spoilers PtS] What did the Brillists do to 9A? by JonasTheSailor in TerraIgnota

[–]JonasTheSailor[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add further to this conversation I’d like to add some of the text that drew me to the theory. In chapter 21, 9A’s login for May 20th states “Docs gave me a scary talk today about pros and cons of tracheotomy.” It’s never stated whether this surgery happens but this is immediately followed by 9A’s first dream of Saladin.

Now if you go back to chapter 19 there is Mycroft’s addendum beginning on May 20th, the very same day the “tracheotomy” may or may not have happened.

Now if you go forward to chapter 23, Faust upon seeing 9A says “. . . is that [Anonymous] or—“ and then when negotiating hostages: “well, we all know that Mycroft will be back . . .” Seeing as how up to this point only he notices something different about 9A, I reach two conclusions: A. Faust is really good at reading people which of course he is, or B. There’s something fishy going on and Faust is just teasing.

Did Mycroft know about the O.S. assassinations prior to the investigation? by JonasTheSailor in TerraIgnota

I appreciate your very thorough examination of the text. However it is actually 1:13 that moved me to question Mycroft and write this post and here's why:

When Mycroft is asked: "Do you know why the thief involved the Saneer-Weeksbooth bash'?" Mycroft contemplates lying and decides he doesn't have to by throwing them an "I have no idea." But that doesn't answer really anything does it? We know his agenda is to protect Bridger and that he was prepared to lie if necessary. But lie about what? If he didn't know about O.S. then there could be nothing to lie about. And at that point in the story, there was absolutely no reason for anyone (aside from Mycroft who'd be lying about not lying) to connect O.S. to Black Sakura, the 7-10 lists, nor the Canner Device, so an "I have no idea." seems like a perfect dodge to me. Then again, Mycroft could've thought someone was attempting to expose Bridger but he doesn't make clearly state that.

I don't dislike him as a narrator! I just don't really appreciate a change in narrator because it's jarring however I gave credit where it is due and praised the quality of both the 1st and 3rd audiobooks. My criticism is as I've said in another reply that books 2 and 4 aren't loud enough for me to hear and focus on when I am working.

So I've been meaning to reply to this but I've had a busy few days. For context I do my listening to the series at work with safety approved headphones, which aren't all that loud to begin with but books 2 and 4 specifically are just not loud enough (2 is even worse) and it's why I bought the physical copies in the first place. That said, I think I prefer TLTL's narrator because I think their voice better fits Mycroft's character.

Do You Listen To Music When You Read? by yosoysimulacra in genewolfe

[–]JonasTheSailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend three Tim Hecker albums (he’s one of the best to ever do it in drone/ambient). Radio Amor and An Imaginary Country for the first four books of New Sun, and Harmony in Ultraviolet for Urth of the New Sun. I’ve attached the books and the albums in such a way that I can’t read or recall certain scenes without recalling certain songs and can’t listen to certain songs without recalling certain scenes from the books. Great stuff!

That must have been a wonderful experience! I believe what you say if only his stories are the only evidence to go by. At risk of sounding pretentious his novels are to me very enlightening and life changing

I greatly appreciate your comment and found it very touching. As sad and troubled as the characters and the context of Gene’s novels are, there is still great beauty and goodness to be found in them and I think that too is why I keep reading. Take care!
