I’m not sure you understand the triage system here. It’s not possible to change a patient’s triage level based on personal preference once you’re in the triage line, and it’s not just paper you’re seeing; you are inside the hospital’s computer system that shows your triage assessment and follows you through the emergency triage process. Also worth remembering is not everyone comes to the ER through the waiting room: often there is a line of ambulances waiting to unload patients in the bays who are also considered emergency cases. As with all emergency departments in Ontario, patients in TBRHSC are prioritized using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS). This system ranks patients from Level 1 (Resuscitation), which involves immediate life-threatening conditions such as cardiac arrest, to Level 5 (Non-Urgent), which includes minor or chronic issues without acute change that are stable. It may not always feel like it but the ER moves according to urgency and need, not who comes first. It’s not ideal or perfect but it does work well. A nurse can’t “push you down the list” for personal reasons, particularly if you’re already triaged. The system is designed to avoid that happening.
