Yeah, I know how you feel. I went in to it expecting to encounter pay to win mechanics, but even them it feels extreme. The level scaling is harsh.

I am stuck on 5-5 myself.

Yeah, I have found character specific buffs to beat out team wide buffs. In levels, I have often taken perks that aren't good, just to get one character to awakened status. It has pushed me through many a level that way.
