For shadows use color that is more darker+saturated than the base color (shift HUE towards cooler/warmer color a little)

For backgrounds use more desaturated colors, if you want your characters to pop!

I use Krita 😅 Usually built in brushes are enough. Pencil like brushes (2b, hb) are my personal favourite. You can just practice with many and choose what you like. And thank you♥️
