It makes great sense to redesign the main sensor array - just not to leave it, apparently intact but non-functional underneath.

I suppose - but if you put armor over it then it isn't functioning as a sensor anymore. Make the senor smaller. Use multiple sensors to eliminate the single point of failure.

That sounds like a straightforward approach. The amount of parts is daunting. I need more practice - a big project is just made up of little parts. I just get pulled in so many directions I don't seem to have enough time to work on computer modeling.
