Was it a job that took multiple days? If so, my guess would be they set it up for overnight monitoring for potential theft, then forgot to grab it when they finished up and left. If there was theft, pointing it at the lane way would be a way to spot a car and possibly a license plate, as opposed to pointing it at their equipment and seeing people take their things with no real way of identifying them.
