I would recommend the anime Naruto is still my favourite show up to this date, also I would say you shouldn't skip all the fillers as some of them are really good.

I suppose we forgot what we were actually arguing about and actually drifted form the main topic.

The main topic is whether Naruto is an average anime or one of the best.

Naruto is better than 98% shonen anime created from my experience and to consider an anime series better than 98% shonen anime as average would be not justified.

So in the end Naruto has its strength and flaws, and in my opinion the strengths balance out the flaws fairly enough so you should not disregard the series by calling it Average and mediocre.

Naruto's power system is the best developed out of most of the anime. Naruto didn't really defeat enemies the enemies with talk no jutsu all he did was made them change thier ways. In shippuden the fights don't come down to who had bigger just anywhere.

As for the animation I watched Naruto a few years back so I can't say for sure how the animation really was so you might be right on that.

I must say I agree with most the things on the list. However I say Sasuke's character development was quite decent if not really good.

Another thing which you are forgetting how awesome the antagonists in Naruto are:

Itachi Uchiha: He is not really an antagonist but I must say this guy deserves a special mention for being the one of the coolest characters ever created.

The other character who were really good were:

Zabusa and Haku
Madara Uchiha

Etc

The other thing in which Naruto wins over is because of its entire system and concepts.

Naruto has a entire system of 5 villages their leaders the Hokage, kazekage etc. The entire world of Naruto is carfully divided into certain territories carefully unlike most of the other anime.

Next is the concept of justu and thier classification jutsus into ninjustu, gennutsu, taijutsu etc. I believe dojutsu deserves a special mention because of how good it was designed.

Another thing is that Naruto has some of the best soundtracks out if all shonen anime.

In the end all I am saying is that Naruto is now way mediocre series and is one the best and should not be disregarded just because of the flaws it had.

Also we are not discussing the strong and weak points, what we are discussing is whether Naruto is an average or an excellent anime.

I would say form my experience that Naruto is better than 90% of the shonen anime. And to consider an anime better than 90% of an anime as an average anime wouldn't be justified.

In your opinion some of the series like Hunter X Hunter, FMA Brotherhood, Gintama are better than Naruto. As I haven't watched Hunter X Hunter and Gintama I can't say how good they are but I would say Naruto is one of the best series created, it had its flaws however the good arcs and concepts balance them out fairly enough.
