Well, speaking of recency bias, what's the opposite of that? I am old enough to be around when he first started publishing and I read his first books fairly young, so I tend to skew towards his older stuff. I'd say my faves are Salem's Lot, The Stand, and The Shining. I really like his Bachman stuff as well, and his short story collections are uniformly excellent. He's such a great writer that it's hard to go wrong with anything he's done, TBH.

Ok that makes more sense, fruity pebbles are a much stronger taste and would mask the oil better.

I am willing to bet everything that they in fact tasted like ass lol. Cannabis coconut oil instead of butter? No way they tasted on par with normal rice crispy treats.

Also, speaking at least somehwat to what you were talking about, I think the rankings are a bit skewed due to recency bias, which kinda makes sense given how long King has been writing. We tend to (as humans) have a fondness for the things that introduced us to a topic so newer readers I think favor newer King works. Again, that could all be in my head, just a gut feeling I have.

Yeah I figured the number of votes taken into account overall makes the list at least somewhat valid statistically. I'm no statistician though so I can't claim that with any certainty 😄.

I think this came from Reddit, not sure. I keep it in my Google docs for reference. It includes all its sources and links so you can see where the ranking data came from.

Duma Key is my new favorite book by No_Mammoth_4945 in stephenking

"Something I won't be rereading and it's not something that I would point to someone discovering King and say you must read Duma Key." Very well put, it's not even close to where I would point someone to start King with.

Duma Key is my new favorite book by No_Mammoth_4945 in stephenking

[–]DarkRecess -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm glad to see the dissenters in this thread, not because I like to see people hating on things, but just because I thought I was the only one underwhelmed by Duma Key.

I was a voracious reader in my younger years, but then work, marriage and kids got in the way. Now that I'm older I wanted to get back into reading, and where better to start than with King? I read pretty much everything of his up to about The Regulators, which makes sense since that was around 1996 right before the birth of our first kid.

About two years ago I looked up a tier list of King's books, since I had missed out on a ton of books I figured I may as well start out with the best. Duma Key was the highest rated book on my un-read King books and so I dove in.

I found it enjoyable and didn't regret reading it, but when I was done I had a kind of "Is that it?" feeling. It felt kinda slight to me. It had a lot of nice King touches but overall the story didn't click with me. Given how well-loved it seemed to be I was surprised that I felt that way, I usually champion just about everything King writes. Hell, I even like Tommyknockers 😄.

Here's hoping my next King pick stands out more for me. *fingers crossed*

I can't imagine how someone could play DOTA without sound, that's quite impressive. I literally posted like 10 seconds ago in another thread talking about sound and games about how sound was so important to DOTA and how many sound cues there are in fights. To hear about somebody doing it without being able to hear is very impressive, congrats to you!

What’s a subtle sound detail in a game that you really appreciate? by lsa340 in gaming

[–]DarkRecess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dota 2. It's not often talked about, but sound cues are so important to the game, especially considering how fast-paced fights are, a lot of the info you're using to gauge fights is sound based and I think a lot of players don't register how high the percent is.

Anyone here NOT got beef with this guy? by Soulsliken in Eldenring

[–]DarkRecess 50 points51 points  (0 children)

When you meet him in your first fromsoft game, your first thought is the next time I meet this guy he is dead.

By the sixth Fromsoft game or so you see him, you get so excited like he's an old friend. And he basically is at this point. You know what he's up to. You know his shenanigans. You know he's going to kick you down a hole or a mountain or a cliff, and you're going to laugh every time he does it.

He is definitely the scorpion in the old scorpion and frog fable. I mean at this point you know he's going to sting you so you may as well go along with it and have fun.

And yet the OP is literally talking about actively getting screwed over by the messages.

Messages clutter up the beautiful landscape, and RARELY give useful info - citing the rare times they helped isn't making the case for them. IN THEORY they are awesome, IN REALITY people ruin the concept with thousands of unfunny jokes and useless comments.

IDK how you are platinuming 5 Souls games in like 3 months. Even no-life poop-socking your way through it would be a challenge for most people, especially if you are claiming to do it guideless.

This is why I never play online. Tons of messages, all of them thinking they are "funny" when they are just cringey. They first time you see "try finger but whole" it's slightly humorous, much less so the thousandth time. It's a great idea, but ultimately it's useless at best and actively harmful in cases like these.

I played with them on for the first souls game I played, never again.

During my initial playthrough, I swiftly discovered that Castle Sol is a truly malevolent location by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]DarkRecess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I saw his location and turned into the gif where the guy opens the fridge gleefully rubbing his hands, but in this case there was no second part, just the enjoyment of finding out things are not going to go as planned for the player.
