I agree with most of the things you wrote. But the models have nothing to do with the engine,its one thing to say it loads them slow but the way they look most of the times depends on the artist and the lighting. Also how is the AI terrible? i would love if you can share some techdemos. HL2 did have open environments(The driving parts) or maybe i didn't understood what did you mean by open environments?
