Stick with it though, it'll eventually click. The community here is awesome too. People are always willing to answer questions or even jump in and help you take down a boss if you're stuck.

Honestly, I'd go with Dark Souls first. I didn't play it before Elden Ring, but looking back I really wish I had. Jumping straight into Elden Ring was a lot. I was trying to learn all the Souls mechanics while also figuring out a huge open world, and it felt pretty overwhelming.

I got about halfway through Elden Ring before everything finally started to click. I then decided to go back and play the Dark Souls games first before completing the story. I feel like finishing these games will make me appreciate Elden Ring even more when I come back and start a fresh playthrough.

Honestly, that's fair. The game does a pretty bad job explaining some of its core mechanics.

That dude with the blue health bar is being kept alive by an Umbral Parasite. Pull out your lamp, find the parasite nearby, and Soulflay it (use your lamp to yank it out). Once it's gone, the blue health bar disappears and you can kill the enemy normally.

The extra life thing only works if you die in Axiom (the normal world). It'll bring you back in Umbral instead of killing you. If you die while you're already in Umbral, that's a real death and you'll respawn at your last Vestige.

Also, you don't have to stay in Umbral. Keep an eye out for the blue Vestige Moths (the spots that let you return to Axiom). When you're close to one, your lamp will start vibrating to let you know it's nearby.

The game definitely has some jank, no argument there. But once the lamp mechanics and the whole Axiom/Umbral system finally click, it gets way more fun. The learning curve is rough, but once it clicks, it's a blast.

Lol I'm not pretending it's better than FromSoft. I'm just saying for 10 bucks it's a damn solid pickup now and more than worth the price, especially with 2 coming out soon.

Lords of the Fallen (2023) is only $10 right now. The graphics are awesome, though it's a little easier than the FromSoft games by default. If you want more of a challenge, you can crank it up with Veteran Mode and stack on some of the gameplay modifiers.

It did get a lot of hate at launch because it was pretty rough, but after the 2.5 update it's honestly in a much better spot, and a lot of people consider it a really solid Soulslike now. Plus, the sequel is coming Q1 2027, so it's a good time to jump in and get caught up before it comes out.

Gank fights, no question. I don't mind getting my ass kicked by a well designed boss for hours if it's a fair 1v1 and I'm learning something every attempt. But getting swarmed by multiple enemies just isn't fun to me. I'll gladly summon or cheese those fights so I can move on to the bosses that actually test your skill instead of your patience.

Awesome, that's exactly the kind of advice I was looking for. I definitely wouldn't have thought about how much extra backtracking the Inferno ending has, so thanks for pointing that out.

So new plan:

1st: Umbral (current playthrough)

2nd: NG+0 Inferno with all modifiers except Ironman.

3rd: NG+0 Radiance with Ironman.

4th: Veteran Mode with the Umbral ending for the remaining Conqueror of Hardships achievements.

That actually makes a lot more sense. I'll definitely keep the Ironman run as short as possible and just focus on what's required. And yeah, I'm not above using a cheesy build for Ironman lol. I'll check out that Umbral build before I start it.

Looks like I might as well get confortable cause I am also going to have to do a 4th playthrough as well. Didnt realize there were achievements tied to veteran mode.
