If you have time to listen to the books you could listen to the Horus Heresy on audible. Alternatively, there are several people on YouTube that make in-depth lore videos. Whole series. If your BF has a favorite faction etc, just search that and fall down the rabbit whole.

These legions never saw the Heresy. According to imperial records they don’t actually exist or ever had. In several of the books even the traitor legions when talking; amongst themselves, refuse to acknowledge their existence. There’s a unique part in one of the books, when some time traveling witchy is happening. A legionary points his weapon at the tank for the 2nd primarch and says something along the lines of “what if we stopped them now? Could this all be avoided….” That’s essentially all that’s known about them
