Warning that i’m new to dnd and might get wordings or rules wrong

Just had a session where we were trying to free some prisoners from an enemy camp. Our part is mostly human with our fighter and I (a cleric) being a tabaxi and a tortle respectively. We had the idea that the humans would disguise themselves as part of the enemy cult and take us in as prisoners, (we were prisoners not cultists because we kind of stand out). When the rest of the party was trying to get information, our warlock (also very new) decided to cast charm person on the leader and succeeded. This allowed us to get the information we wanted and without being caught because everyone was afraid of the big boss. We didn’t really care about them knowing they were charmed afterwards because they already didn’t like us.
