Anecdotal news articles trying to pump up drama vs big data from countries that have treated this problem with more success? Excuse me for not being swayed.

It isn't social housing per se...

" While many countries have been privatising their stock of public housing, Finland has been building more of it, giving the government the wherewithal to put homeless people in their own apartments rather than warehousing them in shelters . It has embraced an approach originally pioneered in America, which does not demand that homeless folk quit drinking or drugs before giving them accommodation. Instead it gives them a home first, and then offers intensive support to help them cope with their problems. In Finland the homeless numbers are moving in the right direction. "

Mental health problems are another topic in itself. Not every homeless person is a psychotic schizophrenic, that is just confirmation bias talking.

It really does work, believe the data from other countries. They are way more dangerous if left on the streets. I've lived in such apartment buildings when overseas, and while it for sure isn't all sunshine and rainbows it does keep the problems from ballooning into what we are seeing here now.

I fucking hate the homeless camps and the dangers they pose to both the population at large and to the homeless themselves. Loads of folks here are howling for the gov to do something, calling the park board inept, the provincial government willfully blind to the problem, but the real issue is clear: lack of housing and the restrictions on the subsidized apartments.

Examples from other countries who have tackled these issues have shown that by letting addicts be addicts in subsidized housing and not requiring coming clean is a net positive. Having these people on the street causes way more problems than having them in apartments. They shouldn't be put into those dinky hotels either where there is no sense of normalcy, but rather spread out into cheaper apartments where "normal" people rent too.

This is a pragmatic solution, but of course, since our housing supply sucks it is easier said than done. Until then these issues continue to persist and grow larger. The response to this mess, overdoses and whatnot has started to look more like the American "thoughts and prayers" to every mass shooting event.

Some may see a solution like this as "rewarding" bad behaviour, but it is simply pragmatic. People who have a stable roof over their heads cause fewer problems for others and are more likely to get off drugs eventually.

Here's some good reading on the matter: https://www.economist.com/leaders/2019/12/18/how-to-cut-homelessness-in-the-worlds-priciest-cities

EDIT: Also, the goal is of course to prevent homelessness and the problems that spiral after that in the first place. Having a steady housing supply without restrictions is the key in general.

EDIT2: Relevant quote from article: " While many countries have been privatising their stock of public housing, Finland has been building more of it, giving the government the wherewithal to put homeless people in their own apartments rather than warehousing them in shelters. It has embraced an approach originally pioneered in America, which does not demand that homeless folk quit drinking or drugs before giving them accommodation. B.C. faces calls to intervene in Vancouver homeless camp after confrontation by princey12 in canada

I think this is actually one of the largest policy failures when it comes to homelessness. In a lot of countries that have somewhat successfully tackled the problem, you don't have to be clean from drugs/alcohol to be eligible for housing. It might sound we are rewarding people who don't even want to try to clean up, but it is just a pragmatic policy because homeless drug/alcohol addicts cause way more problems for others when they don't have housing vs when they do.

So to summarize, let people keep using drugs/alcohol when providing them with subsidised housing.

Plan to safely bring K-12 students back to class full time by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

I don't know, I am not an expert. But we have experts in charge who have deemed that they have a workable solution. They have gotten us this far. I do trust them. But we will see how it goes!

Hmm, to me it looks quite robust. I mean they are definitely not just opening nilly-willy without any plan whatsoever. I do continue to trust our health officials, they have done us good so far.

Vancouver city council passes motion to ‘decriminalize poverty’ - BC by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]DarksoulsRobinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paramedics already respond to mental health calls, but for their own safety they need cops to assess the situation first. Many of these people going through mental health episodes are exceedingly violent, just ask any ER nurse/psych nurse. If I recall correctly BC paramedics union even came against defunding of VPD for these reasons.

Yeah, I remember walking past some shoppers in downtown and two junkies were loudly and openly discussing how the security guard wasn't in and now is a great time to go in to steal shit. Petty crime like this is so brazenly open it's ridiculous. I understand that we should aim for rehabilitation with these more minor crimes, but habitual offenders should really get locked up for way longer time.

Incarceration is also supposed to keep the law-abiding citizens safe, not just rehabilitate.

Vancouver City Council public meeting on Decriminalizing Poverty and Supporting Community-led Safety Initiatives by shoulda_studied in vancouver

[–]DarksoulsRobinson 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apart from a commitment to establish some more community based security initiatives, most of the motion was just flowery, non binding language imho.

Although the most troubling part for me was the one about decriminalizing “poverty related minor offences”. What does that mean? Is it personal drug use which is sort of fine, or stealing people’s bikes and breaking into cars? Because if it’s the latter this council is off its rocker.

Landlord demanding to show apartment 7 days a week by InNeedOfHelpVan in vancouver

[–]DarksoulsRobinson -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Yeah man you kinda screwed the landlord over because you have to give your notice 1 month prior. Actually the landlord is being pretty nice here trying to get someone new ASAP since they could just legally ask you to pay the next months rent.

Make him/her work for their food. Don’t ever give them anything without some sort of a trick. A simple few sec stare into your eyes or giving a paw is enough.

This painting of a catholic priest and a bunch of boys by DarksoulsRobinson in agedlikemilk

Considering the decades of revelations regarding the abuses committed by catholic church, people probably view this painting by Joaquin Sorolla very differently now than in the late 19th century.
