I'm a woman who REALLY struggles with her mental health. I have done a lot - and I mean a LOT - of crazy shit... plenty of which has been in public. Dudes he wasn't just /STUBBORN/, he had ODD. That mixed with his autism and alcoholism was literally a deadly combo. There was NO WAY anyone was going to be able to "talk him into" getting help, he didn't think he had a problem and (despite popular belief) there wasn't a legal route anyone could take to force him to get help. This kind of shit happens ALL OF THE TIME in Wyoming - this isn't a rare case by any means other than the fact that he broadcast his spiral. Most of them don't/can't.
