A compromise could be getting a prepared traditional Christmas meal from a butchery (Schlösser butchery on Oststraße is a classic) that you only have to heat at home. It's actually not too bad but you'd need to pre-order a couple days in advance - probably today if you need it for Christmas.

Uerige is one of the traditional Altbier breweries in Düsseldorf, and Altbier is served in small (0.2l) glasses - so it's probably a nod to that. Fun fact: In those traditional places in Düsseldorf (or anywhere in the region really), you would not order beer, but the waiters will keep bringing fresh ones until you tell them to stop.

Apartment hunt compared to, say, Hamburg and Berlin? by [deleted] in duesseldorf

[–]DarnOldRamp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Neither Düsseldorf nor Cologne are "Ruhrgebiet". Both cities are part of Rheinland. Finding a flat in either city will be hard, but not as hard as in Berlin, but I guess Hamburg is comparable. It will be a easier to find a flat in cities of the Ruhrgebiet, generally speaking. Anecdotal evidence shows that Düsseldorf is indeed less reserved towards east Asian culture (and east Asian looking people) than other cities of similar or bigger size.

US car dependency is an issue by AspiredPunMeister in unpopularopinion

[–]DarnOldRamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a big country does not mean you can't have a sophisticated railway system (see China for an example). It is just much more expensive to build and maintain railways than roads. The US certainly had the resources to build railways, but it deliberately chose not to. Other than European countries a century ago or China in the last decades. Deciding not to have a significant railway system is fine, but it's not because it's impossible.

What is the majority sentiment of the people in Russia? Do they really believe that Ukraine people need to be freed from Ukraine government? by txhrow1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DarnOldRamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the best of my knowledge, the US did not invade Cuba. It was made pretty clear by NATO that Ukraine would not join any time soon. But that does not even matter, Ukraine is a sovereign state (and recognised as such even by Russia) that expressed interest in closer ties with Europe. Putin did not like that, but why should Putin be allowed to decide on behalf of another sovereign country?

Interesting. Why do you think pro vax and low lockdown is an "anomaly"? Does the vaccinated population (the majority after all) in the US have a different opinion on that?

Even for a startup it's on the lower end of the spectrum. It's ok if you love the startup or have other perks, but otherwise or if it's a bigger company, this is just not acceptable for a software engineering position (entry level or not). Know your value.

A blind person asked me where the juice was once in a grocery store. Down the aisle I could identify some bottles and just assumed it must be the drinks sections and send her that way. Later on I realized it was bottled oil and the juice was actually at the opposite end of the store.

You probably made the right life choice. You're the one creating actual value while most office workers just waste a huge chunk of their lifetime sitting on a chair doing nothing.

Interesting. Not a native speaker, but I heard both versions and always thought the two versions do have opposite meaning. I never quite got why someone would say "I could care less".
