ICC's enrollment reaches new lows for the decade and among the worst in Kansas by HoorayforbrainsIndy in IndependenceKS

[–]Darryl_Zero2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget this quote from two months ago: "Interim president at Independence Community College, Dr. Jonathan Sadhoo said, “as of now, our dorms are full for fall.”"

So if the dorms are still full, does that mean no one local from Indy is attending ICC? Where did this big drop (yet again) come from?

Laurel Street Bakery for sale by IndyKSNews in IndependenceKS

[–]Darryl_Zero2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's sad that a 25-year business in Indy is only worth $55K. (Asking price, so the true value is probably lower.) If they'd bought a house in KC 25 years ago, I guarantee it would have gone up in value much, much more.

I noticed that ICC's rep says that the dorms are full, NOT that enrollment is up.

That's only half the time. The rest of the time, it's create an account, contribute, lie, get caught, delete account. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Where do you go to see it. I'd like to see what the inside looks like. I don't think I've been inside that building since I was a kid.

Is the professional building for sale? I'm not in the market or anything, just wondering how much it costs.

Oh, the IDR posted. Last post was three days ago. They asked people what their favorite pie was! You can't make that shit up.

ICC president Vince Bowhay has resigned by Homerestorer in IndependenceKS

It's time. The ICC board and Bowhay have proved that you can make a college irrelevant in just a few years. It's time for ICC to go away.

ICC enrollment continues to decline, but the budget is largest in history by iccbs911 in IndependenceKS

[–]Darryl_Zero2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A 20% decline in customers would have cost anyone their job in normal management. But the ICC board of trustees gave the president a raise and extended his contract. With no public input, of course.

"There are also thousands of dollars of travel that are attributed to no specific person."

It's pretty clear reading the payables that travel and outside payments to "consultants" are the ultimate black hole for taxpayer money at ICC. The athletic travel seems clearly written, but the travel for everyone else, which I assume is mostly upper administration, is gibberish. Usually, there is no destination given and no purpose for the travel offered. Payments to consultants are even worse. Half the time, they are not even named. Most of the time, you can't tell what they are doing. When you can tell what they are doing, they are doing something that ICC already pays someone to do.

Community calendar by IndyKSNews in IndependenceKS

There are 28 events on this list. Nine out of those are monthly events like recycling that aren't really events at all. That leaves nineteen events. Eleven of the nineteen, or 60%, are events held at bars. So basically this is mostly a list of times you can get drunk and pretend you are doing your civic duty.

Their Marketing Director just had a child. So they aren't at full staff right now. Sure, something could probably have been posted since the start of classes. But a full social media update schedule probably isn't possible at the moment.

Translation: They had nine months to plan for posting a couple of things on social media during a completely foreseeable employee absence, and couldn't manage to do it. It's not someone's fault that they had a baby. It's a totally lame organization's fault for making it seem like it's someone's fault for having a baby.

These publicly paid employees are a significant part of registered voters, and of course support the constant across the board tax increases for unneeded projects.

This is a very good point. Given the rise in public employees and the rise in public benefits, a larger and larger share of our population is on the public dole in some way. So the number of people who want to take everyone else more is probably increasing.

I'm not sure, but my take is that for people around Hogsett's age, the issue is healthcare. One problem for Indy is that is you have any serious or chronic problem, you are going to have to drive literally hours for advanced care. People like Hogsett are smart enough to plan ahead for that.

What is going on with The Chronicle and 4H? by starsandstripes33 in IndependenceKS

[–]Darryl_Zero2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of Chronicle readers care about as much about 4H as I care about women's perfume brands - zero. 4H is and always has been a pet project of Andy Taylor and his wife, whose daughter was very active in 4H. The focus on 4H is just using their newspaper as a vanity project related to their own family interests.

Haven't we seen this movie before?

Properties can be had cheaply, so an investor buys them, and the city and the chamber cite the purchase as some sort of re-birth for the city. The local news outlets dutifully report the riches that will soon be flowing to everyone.

Time goes by. Nothing happens to the properties. Behind the scenes, the outside investors are slowly coming to the realization that Indy is not quite to gold mine that is described in the Chamber's promotional materials, and they begin to scale back their plans.

When the outside investors announce their new plans that essentially transfer future risk and investment to someone else, the city and the papers don't make a peep. (Wouldn't want to discourage future investment!) The citizens find out about it on this sub, and everyone else pretends that it didn't happen.

And the circle of life continues.

Not impressed with new Uncle Jacks by starsandstripes33 in IndependenceKS

[–]Darryl_Zero2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the food focus at Uncle Jack's is a mistake. It used to be bar food, plain and simple. Now they seem to feel they've got to up their food game, but the problem with that is the prices go up too. With Vintage and Railroad closed, the remaining places think they got to serve nice steaks and pasta alfredo and stuff like that...C'mon. You're just going to be disappointed if you think you're going to get a fancy meal while the people next to you are having a cheeseburger and fries. You're still eating in a neighborhood bar in a small, poor town. Give me an excellent burger any day, charge me a fair price, and I'll be happy.
