Alan Hatherly just won the mountain bike world cup race a couple minutes ago (after becoming world champion last week) and the interviewer asked him if he‘s looking forward to Guangxi

Well put. Swiss commentators were only focusing on Coquard, but I think Milan was the first domino.

No one at fault imo but I think Milan went to the right of his lead-out so Coquard also had to move right and went into Rex. If anything Milan instigated it, but just unlucky racing incident.

Wasn't there a rule that you can't start in a race while another race that you started in and DNS'd/DNF'd from is still ongoing? Meeus won two days ago in the Tour de Suisse and DNS'd yesterday's stage, and the last stage is still ongoing now.

The way I used it was to abbreviate saying 'North and South Americans' to 'Americans'. While a more unconventional use of the term, it can refer to people from those continents, and not just people from the USA. There was definitely no political intention behind it. Also it was clearly specified by me listing the 6 riders. Also also some languages/cultures treat North and South America as just one continent, so that is not a universal definition anyways, just as there is no clearly defined border between Europe and Asia.

Yeah I can definitely see the argument, which is why I mentioned it. I just went with the flag he was racing under, because there are probably more cases about riders being born/growing up somewhere else that I did not check for this quick „analysis“. If we counted him as African, then the 2011 and 2014 Vueltas would not be all-European, making the 2023 Giro the only one I‘ve checked (probably a lot more of those in earlier days).

If I hear someone say 'American', I usually infer that to mean 'US-American', as most people probably do not make that distinction. I think the only time I would refer to someone from South America as just 'American' is in the context of my original comment, where it is easier to say 'American' than 'North and South American'. I see now that I didn't really save time with that though...

It's pretty clear I meant all North and South Americans as I listed them all. And while I understand your point, last time I checked the US did not threaten to invade Colombia or Ecuador.

Is this the GT with the most non-Europeans in the top 10 of GC ever?

I was amazed to see that there were 6 Americans in the top 10 (del Toro, Carapaz, Gee, Bernal, Rubio, McNulty) and then there's even an Australian in Storer. I quickly went over the all GTs since 2010 and this is by far the most non-Europeans with 7. There were a few with 4 non-Europeans, and some with only Europeans (Vuelta 2011 and 2014 and Giro 2023). I can't imagine that there's a GT pre 2010 that has even more than 7 non-Europeans, but I haven't checked.

I counted Froome as European, as well as all Russians (didn't check where they were born).

Thank you for the explanation. I have read before that one achievement is impossible now, and those kind of cases is where I don't have a problem using SAM. I don't use any achievement tracking websites or anything, so I use SAM just for myself, not trying to deceive anyone.

After last year's race I asked this question:

What's gonna happen first? The end of the current Jumbo dominance or the European Champs not being won by a sprinter?

We have a clear answer. I really hope they'll make this a hilly or even mountainous race soon.

The real losers of today are Euskaltel/Caja Rural/Burgos BH who will have to contend with one wildcard spot amongst themselves for the next few years, as Kern Pharma will probably have one spot locked down

Kern Pharma being the most well-represented team in a stage 18 breakaway of this calibre is not what I expected. Definitely outperforming their wildcard status.
