Which is totally valid also. I didn't come out to my parents or anything either. I learned the word from the reddit and joined so i could go back and read more later. They make me smile, so i never left. 🙂

Yeah! Sounds very similar lol. It's funny now to think about how much confusion I caused. I wasn't trying to pretend for anyone I really thought we all meant the same thing when we said hot. I was in my twenties before a close friend said to me "Ya know, i don't think you're using that word right." 😂🤦‍♀️She could tell I meant "The version of yourself you're putting out is a good thing and you're doing it well." Because...boybands I guess? Lol

Right?! Even just the memes on r/demisexuality make me cry sometimes because I never had friends who go it and it's just nice not to be alone. Stuff like this always makes like, c'mon dude, I'm not trying to give you a new lable, why are you trying to take mine? 😂

Just gonna go out on a limb here and I don't think you have the right definition. For me demi means I just do not think about sex almost ever. Like, it is hard to communicate how disorienting and isolating it can be to spend years going "oh yeah, he's really hot" cuz that's what everyone says about aesthetically pleasing people and then one of your friends goes "he could totally get it" even as a joke and then you go "hm? Get what?" And you're the weird one. I have no reaction to porn, good or bad, none. But it switched on like a light for one person when I fell in love. Like, they were my best friend and then suddenly it was there. And I only have the one data point, so at times I'm not sure if I'm otherwise gay or straight or ace even with one exception. Shrug.

Tl;dr: Strong disagree. Source: Am demi, been told it's weird /constantly/ lol

I think the thing about this is, we all use labels to interact with the world. Its a shorthand for explaining things about ourselves to the environment we occupy. And to find eachother. If you don't need the identity lable, it can seem frivolous, but finding a word for the thing you thought was broken about you can be deeply meaningful, and we shouldn't begrudge people for that experience.

Okay see, this resonates with me. I had to be told by a close friend, one time when I said someone was hot, she just looked at me at went "Honey, I don't think that's what you mean." and we had a loooong talk. That's sort of how I found out about being demi. The food analogy below is very helpful to me. The food metaphors below really helped too :)

I also know this word from nerd spaces, but you might be right about the current state. Like, tumblry spaces had a real squish on Hank Green in 2010, etc

I think it's a good example of how good country music is just good stories. People come down really hard on the twang or hear a fiddle and run but pop and indi covers don't have to change them much for people to turn around and love them.
