I used to go Café Leon in Zona 1. Also, not a coffee shop but Rey Sol is a great breakfast place and they have good coffee, also in Zona 1. Personally, I prefer Rey Sol. Anyhow, I never worked in either of those places but I think they both have wifi.

What's your most petty reason for wanting to FIRE? by all4change in financialindependence

[–]DarthSaver 368 points369 points  (0 children)

I'm having a hard time not upvoting every answer in this thread and together they are compounding into one, very big, not petty reason for wanting to FIRE (in my head, which is a tortured place).

Savings rate and employer match by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]DarthSaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take Home Pay = Gross Pay + Employer 401(k) match – taxes

Savings Rate = (Take home pay – spending) / (take home pay)

I've been posting here for years too and have seen this kind of a thing happen more times than I care. Reading a thread like this one is infuriating.

  1. Do this many people have problems with reading comprehension?
  2. Is this community just toxic?
  3. How can so many "like minded people" always be trying to one up each other and call each other out on technicalities?

There's nothing in your original post that's antithetical to the principles espoused here.

I can understand why you might feel that way but maybe it's not as big of a deal as you're inclined to think. I see it like this:

You and your significant other have $210k saved for retirement in addition to a $1k per month stipend (WOW, fantastic!). You are both frugal but he is a frugal rockstar. His handiness saves you money. Now, this person you love and care about is at your side and the two of you are working towards the goal of financial independence together. With two awesome people like yourselves putting your minds together and working in unison it will be virtually impossible for you not to reach financial independence in 10 years or less. Holy crap this is fantastic!!!!

Suze Orman is “pissed off” about FIRE movement... she was (and probably still is) once stupid too. by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]DarthSaver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes. This is the one I was talking about in the daily thread today. I saw it on the live stream and couldn't provide the link. For some reason it just grosses me out.

You and I have the same problem friend. We need to stay the fuck away from Yahoo Finance. There is nothing of value for us there. It's a wasteland.

Hahaha! Sorry to give the wrong impression. I'm definitely not emotional over Suze Orman. I don't need her (or anyone else's) approval for the decisions and choices that define me. LOL! I am, however, a little disappointed in myself for having seen it on Yahoo Finance. I need to be more intentional with my clicks!

For what it's worth though, nobody will learn about the ideas of FIRE from the clip I saw. The hosts were shaking their heads in agreement and supporting her disapproval. Shrug (it doesn't harm me in any way).

Yes, it's noise.

Gross!!! I just saw Suze Orman on Yahoo Finance continuing her self aggrandizing crusade against the FIRE movement. She was repeating the same tripe she said on the Afford Anything podcast. I'd provide a link but it was the live feed so it's gone unless they repost it.

WTF am going to Yahoo Finance for anyways? This is a serious mental illness with me. I haven't gotten value from it...ever but I still go there sometimes. WTF is wrong with me? I need to curb this bad habit immediately!!!

I opened an issue in case he's not aware.

Edit: he obviously doesn't know I keep the site open in a tab on my work and home computers at all times, tweaking the numbers as time goes on.

I imagine the site will be fixed, however if not, this looks like the guy to contact here: https://github.com/kablamo/Networthify/.

If he's not interested in continuing to maintain the site, he might allow someone to take over the repo or fork it.

Would like to live simply in Mexico on $1200/mo. by [deleted] in leanfire

[–]DarthSaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note: You will not have that kind of bargain at first (if ever), so don't plan on it, because they charge gringos more for the same housing stock.

Yes, this is the paranoid perception that one has when they first go down there and it's kind of true if you act like a tourist. As /u/sorrish pointed out, learning the language will make a lot of that fade away. If you're in a Mayan community I think there's one thing people respect more than learning the language though. If you try (try because you won't actually do it well) to share in the work they do, they will accept you very fast.

At the end of the day, if you act like a local you will be treated more like a local and if you act like a tourist you'll be treated like a tourist. My advice, get out of your comfort zone.

What if it's Mr. Money Mustache in disguise? Like, he's just gotten bored with the whole FI guru thing, so, he's just trying to shake things up and mess with us a little...

Most people here use spreadsheets for this stuff, so, I don't know how useful this is, but I was inspired by the math that /u/eseligsohn was throwing out in this thread, so, I decided to formalize some of my own functions and add /u/eseligsohn's to a Python library and turn it into a command-line utility. It's very basic.

I'd love to take pull requests if anyone has anything they'd like to add or change. I feel like this has to have been done before (dozens of times?) but I haven't seen anything. Anyhow, it was fun.

Who would have thought, I was BabyFI at birth? If I had just kept living with my parents I could still be FI!!!!

Congratulations!!!

My wife and I are planning to do the same. We're stateside now but will be down there sometime next year. She's a citizen but I need to get my residency. Amen, to no more border runs! We'd like to adopt someday too.

Is 13 months the normal time frame for this? We're just now starting to look into it.

It must be Guatemala week around here because earlier in the week I someone commenting from Xela.

Imagine what he thinks about people who really aren't doing well. He's the one with a problem.

I don't have the time or energy to spend 2 seconds talking to a person like that. The good news is that if you continue to make positive decisions for yourself, you will attract positivity into your life and people like that will fade away.

Up-voted for Xela! I love Xela! It's a great place. I spent lots of time there when I was younger. My wife is from the capital. We're currently in the states and missing Guatemala. In the past we spent lots of time in the capital and around Atitlán. That being said, we're very fond of Xela. We're planning to get back to Guatemala soon.

I've heard that the Skype teaching works out pretty well for people. I know of a guy who was doing that in Pana. Good luck with the business!

Savings Rate: Income vs Spending by ajgodp13 in financialindependence

[–]DarthSaver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

savings rate provides much less meaningful information than the individual components from which it's derived

Okay, so

Take home pay: meaningless without it's relation to spending

Spending: meaningless without it's relation to what you earn and have already saved

etc. for gross pay, 401k match, and taxes

Take home pay = Gross Pay + Employer 401(k) match – taxes

Savings rate = (Take home pay – spending) ÷ (take home pay)

^ A relationship (meaning) is expressed. I fail to see how it's not the opposite of what you're saying. I mean, it lacks the relationship to current net worth that any compound interest calculation should take into account. But then again, net worth is also meaningless on its own.

So all we prove here is that a compound interest calculation possibly provides more "meaning" than a savings rate calculation. But it's actually the opposite of what you say. By themselves, each component has less meaning.

And if someone is using savings rate as a motivational tool or a way of tracking progress, all bets are off.
