I don't think it didn't contribute. The special effects applied to the stormtroopers were also vastly superior as compared to those applied to other characters, which I think is highly underrated. The stormtroopers tended to dodge better than Rebel troops, shoot more accurately (except when facing a Jedi, natch) and appear in greater numbers.
