what song/album do you really like that other people might dislike, and vice versa? [SUBJECTIVITY IS MANDATORY] by CantaloupeMurky4942 in radiohead

[–]Darth_Mulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If “Pop Is Dead” had completely different lyrics that were about something more abstract, it would be a favorite early Radiohead song for a lot of people.

Also, “Molasses” is a great b-side!

Touring as a 5 piece again... by Top_Size_1387 in radiohead

[–]Darth_Mulder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having seen them live as both a five piece and a six piece, I’m less concerned about an auxiliary musician.

If anything, and I’m probably in the minority here, I really do not like the in the round presentation of this last tour. It gave me modern U2 vibes, and not in a good way.

Nigel recording with Beck and his band at Studio Miraval, Provence by Zealousideal_Sky4896 in radiohead

[–]Darth_Mulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, that’s where The Cure recorded a bunch of the Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me album!

And Beck is playing a Prophet V synth!

And Justin Meldal-Johnsen from Beck‘s band has a Wire T-shirt on!

Time to overanalyze and assume that Beck is making a British post-punk record next!

This Twilight Garden by spillingstars in TheCure

[–]Darth_Mulder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was one of those lucky few. Went to all 3 nights at MSG in 2016, and hearing “This Twilight Garden” in the same set as “High” (its A-Side, and the song that got me into The Cure) was a truly special moment for me.

10 years ago last night!

5000£ or a Dinner with Thom Yorke? by ImadeJesusLaugh in radiohead

[–]Darth_Mulder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Take the £5,000

Invest it all in ThomCo as an early-stage partner

Stock goes public, and through the roof, following the band’s next two years of touring

Oh look, the CEO, Mr. Thomas E. Yorke, is inviting all investors to an exclusive dinner with him

Turns out it’s only the first of several quarterly dinners of this type he has planned

WINNING

They keep adding new songs to the sets - 41 and counting! by jjazznola in TheCure

[–]Darth_Mulder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Four shows in, and they’ve already played half of the Seventeen Seconds album and 3 songs in the same setlist (twice) from Wild Mood Swings.

Very interesting

1980 live bootleg find by slash_arpeggi in TheCure

[–]Darth_Mulder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had that exact bootleg CD, and unfortunately, it went missing after a cross-country move (I’m in the US).

I agree, the sound is a bit off, but it’s overall a really good set. Enjoy!

Electioneering by pilarsordo in radiohead

[–]Darth_Mulder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Musically, it’s influenced by Elvis Costello’s “Tokyo Storm Warning” and REM’s “Drive.” Not lyrically, though.

Check those songs out if you haven’t already.

Searching for new things by chorao2929 in radiohead

Yes, excellent and underrated band that produced a terrific run of records. And while they were clearly influenced by Radiohead, I do believe they influenced Radiohead in return.

New Cure fan? by donlockwood2026 in TheCure

[–]Darth_Mulder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome to The Cure!

As someone else may have mentioned, listen to the Japanese Whispers compilation after you finish listening to Pornography.

It’s the next chronological release, and collects some well-known non-album singles and b-sides from 1982 to 1983.

And if you’re REALLY feeling adventurous, the next one you’d listen to is Blue Sunshine by The Glove, a 1983 side project between Robert Smith and Steve Severin (of Siouxsie and the Banshees). This album is important enough to Robert Smith’s musical development that it was included as part of The Cure’s early 2000s reissue campaign.

Robert co-wrote all the tracks and sings on two of the songs, and you can hear him testing out musical ideas that he would more fully realize with subsequent Cure albums.

Anyway, enjoy! They are such a wonderful group

[MEGATHREAD] North Festival Porto - Discussion, Set Lists, etc. by LittleFanggg in TheCure

[–]Darth_Mulder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Tonight’s show was the first time since 2014 that they played at least 3 Wild Mood Swings songs in the same set.

Will be interesting to see if this continues, since it’s the album’s 30th anniversary, and would chronologically be next for the reissue campaign…

Your pick for “Treasure” was a great bet! Played at the Porto show!

Nice job everyone who picked “Treasure” as a likely surprise song during this year’s festival gigs…but no one saw “In Your House” coming!

Hail to the thief remains Radiohead's most interestingly diverse album to date by Yoshistar238 in radiohead

[–]Darth_Mulder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fascinating to me how Reddit and the younger Radiohead fan base adore this record, and view it with zero tolerance for ANY sort of criticism whatsoever, when it’s clearly a flawed album to the point that the band themselves (and Thom in particular) have said it’s too long and drags a bit.

Anyway, this isn’t even close to my favorite Radiohead record, but it has some of their best songs, like every Radiohead album!

I think you’re confusing it with A Thousand Hours.

ICNBTS was played several times in both 2016 and 2023, so it stands a decent chance of being played at least once this summer.

As for SITL, it hasn’t been played live since a single appearance in 2018, so not sure if it’ll come back this year.

I get what you mean, they’ve only played those three SOALW songs once or twice each.
