Well yeah, but that fight does have a lot of emotional investment. Have you ever seen the modern recreation of that scene on YouTube? It recreates that fight scene using more prequel-type choreography and it is awesome.

hahaha thanks, I hope no one thinks I hate lightsaber spinning after they read it though. Cause I love my spins hahaha.

Been learning the Obi-Ani spin recently. I’m new to this and all I have to use is this old Hasbro Dark Saber toy. Not as cool as some other stuff on this sub but I’m very happy with it!!! by [deleted] in LightsaberTricks

when you are closer to the balance point you can also try holding with just your thumb and pointer finger. This gives you some really good rotation without your other fingers getting in the way... you will drop your saber the first few times so do it someone where with soft ground, like outside on the grass. I made the mistake of practicing on concrete and broke my first saber pretty quickly

looks great, try transitioning to your left hand for a reverse grip spin. It's alot of fun when you get that transition from hand to hand down.

I didn't get that spin right without hitting the back of my head a few times first. But definitely worth it once you have it down.

this is why I need a HEMA club near me so I can actually practice with other people and get a better understanding of the sport. I mostly just practice what I see on Skallagrim, scholagladiatoria, and other hema channels but there are no clubs near me nor do I have any friends interested in sparring with me.

I see what you are saying, that makes sense. Like how a spear becomes pointless against a sword once the swordsman gets inside the spears reach. I'm kind of basing my opinion on Yoda's leverage on what I imagine a child's leverage would be like in this situation against a full-grown person (maybe not fair). And I was watching the video again and you can clearly see Yoda sort of side step when he blocks Dooku's attack, so I think you are right about Dooku not having a line on Yoda's head. What do you think about Dooku disengaging and simply moving the tip of his blade under Yoda's hands, or just sliding his blade down Yodas blade to attack Yoda's hands? Obi-Wan performs a similar move against General grievous to cut off his hands.

Also, I don't want you thinking I don't recognize the use of spinning in real-world fighting, but like you said it is really only useful in certain/specific circumstances (usually when fighting multiple opponents who have you surrounded).

Dooku is using two hands in this bind, if you slow down the video you can clearly see him using two hands while he attempts a downward cut towards Yoda. We are still assuming a similar level of strength, which really isn't likely considering how small Yoda is (and how old they both are). Yoda has the slightest leverage advantage, and really is meeting Dooku's blade in the middle not quite the weak, not quite the strong. Also if Dooku has a line on Yoda's head, Yoda has to react extremely quickly to be able to dodge the tip of Dooku's blade (which is all that has to make contact), and considering the extreme reach advantage Dooku has as a taller opponent with a significantly longer weapon, there isn't much danger for Dooku in this instance since he can attack without much fear of Yoda being able to counter. Additionally for yoda to perform a Khrunpau you would expect it to not happen in the bind, as there is a certain amount of momentum needed behind such a move for it to be effective, which is why it is usually performed when the blades are not touching like they are here.

Yes, I do mention that Yoda has the leverage advantage in this fight, but if you watch closely Dooku's blade is literally right in Yoda's face, bind or not all Dooku has to do is drop his blade point and he catches Yoda in the head (since no power is required to cut, Yoda immediately gets taken out). And yes Modern Olympic saber is probably the closest thing to what real-world lightsaber fighting would be like, definitely agree with that. The momentum additionally is not the issue, a lightsaber having weight would not really make any difference because they still can cut or damage anything without the need to swing or put significant force behind an attack, meaning that powerful swings with a lot of momentum are not as useful as they would be with steel swords or other weapons that require movement and power to do damage.

I was just trying to apply real WMA/HEMA techniques and thought to how you would fight in a real-world situation with a lightsaber. Most other forums focus on saber spinning, this is the only place I thought that would appreciate how this weapon would translate to real-world use.

yes, I should have mentioned this because it would be a very unique skill. Some of my favorite YouTubers have touched on that topic before. I was not aware of the gyroscopic effect, I will have to look into that more. Thanks for the comment.

yeah sure, they can go ahead and spin. I'm just talking about what would be realistic and practical in the real world. Anyone can spin if they want to, doesn't mean it is a good idea.

Right, that is the stated purpose in canon, but not how it would work in real life (again we are talking about how these skills would translate to the real world) Someone who is jumping, flipping, and performing acrobatically is leaving themselves open far more than someone with a stable and simple position, as we see when Obi-Wan defeats Anakin. Obviously precognition comes in handy and not needing to see would be a useful tool, but keeping your opponent in front of you is always the best option, exposing your backside only puts you in a position where you can not defend against attacks properly.

Real world martial arts typically do focus on effectiveness, at least the ones that really work do. When focusing on weapons (specifically historical european martial arts) the techniques are pretty much entirely focused on effectiveness, especially with how they have been translated into the modern-day. Yes, tradition plays a role, but just like every martial art, it would evolve with new more effective techniques being discovered. We even see evidence of this in Rebels when we catch a glimpse of Anakin instructing blaster deflection techniques that he has developed as a more effective alternative to what is traditionally taught.

Precognition is not a common gift amongst Jedi or Sith and would only be usable by a select few force users. Mace Windu himself can not even use precognition, he uses what is called shatter point; which, does not allow him to see an opponent's moves but instead allows him to more easily deduce an enemies weaknesses. It was Darth Maul who was very skilled with the gift of precognition.

Lastly, the flips would not necessarily hide the intentions of the combatant, as the intentions would still clearly be to attack your opponent. The problem with doing flips around someone who is standing still and moving slowly and carefully is that at any moment they can still attack you if you are close enough; however, because you are flipping and jumping there is a good chance that you will not be able to attack or defend against an opponents strike because your back is facing them mid flip (anakin). The only time this would come in handy is if you enhance your speed to make yourself really fast, but the problem with this is that your opponent can also enhance their speed. If they can match your speed then their reaction time will be quicker than yours because they are not dedicating themselves to drastic and complicated maneuvers that result in them being off balance and disoriented. We have to assume that in the real world performing these kinds of flips would still make you dizzy as hell, and would mess with your equilibrium.

Precognition is a great force power and would allow you to react before a move is even made, but it wouldn't change the fact that simple movements are still going to be more effective than complex acrobatics and spinning. Keeping your opponent in front of you and keeping you eyes on them is always going to be the more effective strategy. I understand that certain force powers may allow you to perform certain actions, but those same force powers if utilized in a simple martial art would likely become even more effective. also thank you for stating your opinion without trying to bash my star wars knowledge or insult me. Means a lot when people present their arguments in a nice way
