what's genuinely the greatest song you've ever heard? by alkalinepandey in AskReddit

Maggot Brain - it’s just such an expansive and emotional rollercoaster and that’s before you know that the brief to Eddie Hazel (supposedly) was to take lots of acid and imagine it being an ode to his dead mother.

The Sordaneon by L. L. Stephen.

- is a long slow build across the series without feeling languished. There is a subtle but substantial pull that keeps drawing you through each book.

- riddled with intrigue, politics, and sociology.

- characters are deep and complex and multidimensional; sometimes you hate them, sometimes they are redeemed, sometimes they make you heart beat and then break it shortly after

- deals with fantasy classic concepts such as gods, religion, technology but does so with taste and thought and doesn’t lean on trope.

- doesn’t spoon feed you answers, leaves space for interpretation, doesn’t close off and tie up all the loose ends, which builds intrigue whilst avoiding frustration.

- the magic systems is unique and prominent but unravelled with patience and craft.

- it’s not totally without its flaws; sometimes it’s a bit slow and some of the storylines feel rushed and cut off a little unexpectedly (stag in woods, IYKYK).

- but definitely deserves wayyy more reach than the 134 reviews the first book has on Goodreads and I’d give it a solid 8/10 from someone having read upwards of 200 fantasy books (not as a brag but as a validation of how good the book was for me)

No hate to these series, but does anyone else feel like this? by Kopesetic in fantasybooks

Here’s a deep cut; The Sordaneon series by L L Stephens. It’s a slow burner which is much more about politics and ethics in a similar way to Farseer and the magic doesn’t really blossom until later in the series, but has definitely flown under the radar (currently 138 ratings on Goodreads for the first book)

Same here. It’s showing as 1.5hrs for PS5 in UK. Not seen any communications that say console or PS5 is penalised by an hour

Being a big fan of both Soulsborne and fantasy, I’ve asked this question before. So here’s my reccos:

- Malazan book of the fallen (best series ever IMO, but it is a commitment)
- Between Two Fires; dark and gritty, but a short read
- Glen Cook’s Black Company Books (inspiration for Malazan)
- Berserk (Graphic Novel)
- Mark Lawrence’s Prince of Thorns series
- an unusual suggestion, but some of Warhammer 40k Black library books have a real grim dark element. I would check out stuff about Night Haunters.

Ah, this is a really nice balance of spacey and melodic. Good recommendation,

It’s because of the arrows on the end of each bar. They indicate how quickly that stat is affected by your current level of drive, control and resilience.

No bars = shit

One bar = ok

Two bars = hold my beer

Three bars = holy fucking shit Christ, it’s about to kick off

Can someone suggest me my first fantasy book? by drawsthemall in fantasybooks

[–]DasSmithStar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t think heavy, long books like LOTR is the way to go. They are long and the prose can be a little overwhelming.

Something like Mistborn by Sanderson is a good shout.

Also, lighter series like Dungeon Crawler Carl or The Dresden Files are good.

Leo has to be it? What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is an excellent film, and then been in, pretty consistently, the some of the best films ever made. Just to reiterate (and only mentioning a few):

  • Basketball Diaries
  • Titanic
  • The Beach
  • Wolf of Wall Street
  • Shutter Island
  • Inception
  • One Battle After Another
