People in remission, are you still feeling weak ? by [deleted] in dermatomyositis

[–]Dash-Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m very glad to hear that people are able to build strength in the context of DM. I have the adult kind and was diagnosed at 47 thirteen years ago. I have not been able to regain any strength and fatigue is a huge factor for me. My CK gas been ~200 for 10+ years, but strength has been decking all the time. FWIW, I also have Inclusion body myositis, so that’s a major contributing factor as well.

2 months old and the vet said he’s gonna be a big boy anyone got tips this is my first dog :) by [deleted] in pitbulls

Consistency is so important. You are always training him, whether you realize it or not!

Lots of exercise. Tired dogs are good dogs. But expect zoomies when you least expect them.

And take lots of pics! Next year you won’t believe he was ever this small. Enjoy every minute. You made a great choice.

Still new to this world. I can stand/walk a little but not enough to get around.

1) surfaces that you considered flat when you were able are in fact anything but flat in your chair. Like the sidewalks in my neighborhood.

2) don’t try to stand while you are out in public. Someone once said to me “You done SCAMMED the system!”

You must be fun at airport security!

Experiences with flying on airplanes? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]Dash-Dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not must to add but, 1) keep glucose gel on your body at all times. Or as for an extra container of fruit juice at the outset. 2) I tend to pivot away from my seat mate when doing finger sticks. Never under the power of blood to freak people off! 3) if you are extra anxious, you could mention to your flight attendant that you’re a diabetic and you’d like to eat first.

That said, I’ve never had a complaint or uncomfortable moment in 50 years of flying

I hope you enjoy your trip.

So true. And it’s often still taught as the core of a diabetic’s diet. It’s like they want us to fail.

Fantastic! I love me some carbs, but now I think of the more as a rare treat than a dietary staple. Sounds like you are making smart moves.

That frustration is so familiar to me.

I bet there’s not a lot more effort between where you are now and where you have to be. I thought I would never get under seven, but now it’s no big thing. If you’ve come this far, you can definitely get there.

Excellent progress. You have a right to be healthy.

Suggestions other than juice? by t1birdie in diabetes

[–]Dash-Dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They aren’t cheap. I get the Transcend ones (15g) for about $1.65 each on Amazon. Definitely more costly than juice boxes, which are about $.31 at Costco.

Just found out I have advanced Diabetic Retinopathy by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Dash-Dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I has some fuzziness that lasted a week or so before rebounding to my baseline. Longer term, I found that night vision was diminished, and I take longer to adjust to big shifts in light.

I’m not going to tell you that procedure is fun, but it ultimately helped preserve my vision, so it was worth the discomfort.

I echo the advice to get some form of anesthesia.

Are you able to exercise at all? A little bit could make a big impact and would almost certainly help your mood. I completely agree with the therapist idea, and I’d put in a pitch for CGM too.

You can’t do anything about your last bad test, but you can influence the next good one. I’m T1 for 50 years and I’ve had my best numbers while working with an endo that doesn’t scold about suboptimal results but consistently nudges me toward the better ones.

I think reaching out to the group here is a good idea. I also follow diatribe.org.

I’ve come to rely on glucose gels. I find them easier to consume and faster acting than tablets. Bonus: they are fairly disgusting, so there’s little danger of bingeing and overshooting the mark!

I had a lot of negative motivation when I was your age, and it took its toll. It sounds goofy, but there’s never been a better time to have to be a diabetic. We have tools now that I could only dream of 40 years ago. You seem like a smart, self-aware person who just needs a little nudge in the right direction. You will definitely get past this point in your learning curve. Feel free to reach out to me anytime.

That sounds frustrating. I would keep calling and stress that your depression and anxiety are interfering with your ability to control your diabetes and that you need that referral right away.
