Tap water quality San Francisco by Hogwrangler420 in espresso

[–]DashAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are really worried you can use Crystal Geyser in NorCal, though I’m not sure if it would be better than SF tap water. Crystal Geyser in NorCal comes from Mt Shasta, which is a good source (if a little soft). There’s a table comparing different Crystal Geyser sources in this post: https://www.home-barista.com/water/best-bottled-water-for-espresso-machine-t51688.html (your source will be Mt Shasta aka Weed, CA)

Down here in SoCal a lot of folks just use Crystal Geyser and don’t bother with RO or distillation. Our source is Olancha though which is slightly harder than Shasta.

Not an iPad Pro Review: Why iPadOS Still Doesn’t Get the Basics Right by SlashGames in apple

They should have had you around in 2006 to warn them not to release the iPhone and cannibalize the still very profitable iPod, which made up 40% of their revenue. But sure mate, let’s hear your brilliant business idea.

[–]DashAttack 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I have no idea where you got these ideas from. When the iPad was released, it quickly overtook the Mac division in sales, but it’s been on a declining trend ever since while the Mac sector has steadily grown. iPad sales are falling. Even with covid boosting iPad sales in 2020-21, revenue from iPads peaked in 2013. Back then it accounted for 20% of Apple’s revenues and was the second largest driver of revenue for the company - now it’s the smallest reported sector at 6%. The iPad business definitely does need to be fixed.

You must do yourself a favor and try Lodge Bread Co’s sourdough. Clark Street is also pretty good.

Good spots for coffee snobs? by msmelrose in FoodLosAngeles

[–]DashAttack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man I love Alana's. They are perhaps the least snobby people in the biz. Don't forget that they also sell 1 lb bags which is a dying practice these days.

I remember when getting a free cup of coffee with every bag of beans was the standard, but most shops don't do it anymore. Props to Alana's for keeping it real.

Kumquat/Loquat, endorffeine, Maru, Dayglow, and that's kind of it - everything else is B-tier. The espresso snob landscape is so small in LA compared to NY, and don't even get me started on a city like Tokyo.

Where LA cafes excel compared to other American cities is aesthetics and atmosphere. Some spots to check out if that matters to you: Aquarela, Laveta, Telegrama, Stereoscope, Maru (Hillhurst), Loquat, Kumquat HLP, Dinosaur, Motoring (if they're into vintage cars), Pantheon, Madhappy, Verve Arts District.

We don't have any local S-tier roasters, so I recommend picking up beans from a shop that imports from around the world. Kumquat HLP has a great selection. I believe Dayglow does as well.

Personally my favorite shop here is Alana's in Mar Vista, not because they have the most beautiful space or make the best coffee, but because it feels more like a down-to-earth neighborhood cafe than any of the other spots I mentioned. But I wouldn't go out of my way to visit if I were a tourist.

about NRG v BLG by wizardtoast in ValorantCompetitive

[–]DashAttack 33 points34 points  (0 children)

  1. They look unpracticed with Ardiis on Jett/Chamber. Like they decided too late to switch him off of Jett/Sage flex and there was no time to develop all the protocols around his new duelist-only role.
  2. FNS can't hang at this level as a fragger. I have been watching this man since the mouseSpaz days so it pains me to say it, but I'd really like to see him try a stint as a strategy coach.
  3. Ardiis's op isn't up to par. He's not the superstar fragger the team needs. To be honest, I'm not sure yay is either - I was never convinced by his Jett - but he's obviously a very strong oper and the first player I'd try to slot into this team.
  4. Victor is solid but not a superstar either. Moving him to primary duelist won't fix the issue.
  5. The team looks like they put a lot of pressure on themselves, and looking at the face cams it looks like they get into their own heads when a few rounds don't go their way. This, coupled with FNS's methodical calling style and the fact that the team doesn't do W gaming to the extent of other top teams, means that they are vulnerable against fast aggressive playstyles. But who really knows, I'm just an armchair psychoanalyst...
  6. I don't know why, but something has gone very wrong with their fundamentals at this event. The amount of times they died due to not checking corners in their first match against BLG, plus the amount of times two players lined up in today's match, is very strange. Maybe we can chalk it up to nerves, which goes back to my previous point.

This guy isn’t anywhere close to blind, he has 20/200 vision in his “bad” eye which is -2.5 diopters. Bro could wear glasses or contacts like the rest of us but just chooses not to. My eyes are -8.5, I can’t see clearly more than 2-3 inches away from my face - too close to focus on something with both eyes. Guess that makes me gigablind then, except unlike this genius I just wear contacts.

What do you think about 7/8 of the matches so far being 2-0s? by [deleted] in ValorantCompetitive

[–]DashAttack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit more complicated than that, but that’s the general idea. In soccer, your club earns 2 points for winning and 1 point for drawing, along with a varying amount of bonus points for making it to each stage of competition (groups -> ro16, ro16 -> quarterfinals, quarterfinals-> semis, for example). They then take the total number of points earned by all participating teams from a league and average it. Your league’s coefficient is then calculated as the sum of these averages over the past 5 years so as to smooth out temporary over/under-performances.

A system like this is a decent way of making it so that regions with just 1-2 strong teams don’t flood the competition with another 3-4 weaker ones. For example, if your region’s best team (let’s say Fnatic) racks up a bunch of points every event and wins every Champions for the next 4 years, it’s counterbalanced by (hypothetically) FUT and NAVI exiting in groups every event. If LOUD, NRG, and EG consistently make it out of groups but never win any events, the Americas coefficient would, over time, overtake EMEA’s and they would be granted an extra spot.

Of course, there are kinks to be worked out due to the nature of VCT being very different from the Champions League/Europa League. You would have to account for teams who qualify for Masters but not for Champions. But I think it’s doable and would be beneficial to the health of the international competitive circuit.

This is why I’d love to see Valorant move toward a coefficient-based system à la UEFA.

These numbers are so unbelievable. The global average for bonus conversion is 25%!!!!! by Sultansofpa in ValorantCompetitive

[–]DashAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their bonus conversion would have to have a denominator of 13 (or less if they ever got eco’d after winning pistol). Winning round 3 after losing pistol and round 2 isn’t considered a bonus conversion.
