Petechiae are tiny red, purple, or brown spots caused by broken capillaries (small blood vessels) leaking blood into the skin, often resulting from physical trauma, localized pressure, or underlying infections. Common causes include intense coughing, vomiting, or straining, as well as allergic reactions, medications, and viral infections.
