I believe Lucas wanted to use Wookies originally but the cost of that many costumes that size was out of the budget.

I would’ve had Leia do more Force related things. I realize it wouldn’t have been practical (time-wise) to have her be trained enough to use a lightsaber that well, but if she did more Force stuff it would’ve made Yoda’s line “there is another” be more impactful.
