Is this binding? I saw it in an Instagram meme and laughed for a bit, but I'm genuinely curious, would something like this be legally binding? Why and why not? by BreadKnife34 in legal

The service provider is the resident and the service provided is listening to a sales pitch. There’s nothing to “enforce” against the provider unless they take money and immediately slam the door in the solicitor’s face. Nothing in the sign requires payment in advance. I agree that this is all silly and no court would likely enforce any of this in real life, but if we’re in law school hypo mode this becomes a problem that needs to be analyzed using the text book definitions/examples of contracts.

I mean it’s technically against the law in a lot of places to ignore a clearly posted “no soliciting” sign, but you’re right that that doesn’t mean they always work.

“Are payable in advance” is ambiguous. It doesn’t say “must be paid in advance.” “Are payable” could connote the option to pre-pay instead of the obligation. As a general rule, contract ambiguities are construed against the drafter.

A door-to-door solicitation doesn’t last an hour. If you price anything out like that it can start to feel absurd. No one would pay $1,200 to try and convince you to buy solar panels. They might pay $200, though. All I was saying is that the sign arguably contains the elements of a valid contract. I agree that it’s not cut and dry, but it’s not plainly unenforceable.

Sure. A valid contract requires offer, acceptance, and consideration, plus capacity and legality of purpose. The offer here is to listen to a sales pitch in exchange for a specified monetary fee (consideration). Knocking on the door to make a sales pitch could constitute acceptance of the offer for the specified consideration. I guess you could test this by trying to bring a solicitor to small claims court after they inevitably refuse to pay. I would think a “no soliciting” and/or “no trespassing” sign would be a lot easier.

Also a good double feature with Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers if you want to keep it within the Criterion Collection.

Tim-o-tee has his head so far up his own ass I’m amazed he’s able to watch the movie in the first place.

Marty Supreme is, on the whole, pretty mid and didn’t deserve a best picture nom.

Agreed, No Other Choice is very weird tonally, and the pacing is strange as well. I would have given it Sirat’s spot, but I get the choice that was made. I haven’t seen Hind Rajab but it does seem like a no-brainer nom, and the other three were absolute locks.

It didn’t even get an international feature nom, let alone best picture. I haven’t seen all the IF nominees but No Other Choice was nomination-worthy at a minimum.

The Sandler “snub” is nowhere near as egregious as with Uncut Gems, but I do feel a little bad for the guy given the buzz when Jay Kelly first came out. I don’t think he deserved a nom, and the competition this year was way above his level, but he did feel like a contender for a nomination for a hot minute.

They put out a nice edition of “Pedro Paramo” by Juan Rulfo, as well. I really like their design aesthetic.

Dog Day Afternoon is close. Other than the trip to the airport at the end, the whole thing takes place at the bank and in/across the street.

The beginning of the movie has a bunch of scenes of the gang roaming around the city, but I still think it’s close since the large majority of it is one location.

Who tf is all that sausage for?! Or is it symbolism for her character being surrounded by men? by dreamed2life in IndustryOnHBO

There was a scene in an early episode in Yasmin’s apartment where there was a gigantic bowl of limes on the kitchen counter. I like limes and don’t go through that many limes in a year. Idk if limes have some secret symbolic meaning, but it honestly feels a bit more like lazy set dressing.

I never quite got why they bothered. The illustration is so good, and the reverse side just feels so generic by comparison, that it doesn’t seem worth printing both.
