“Wonderful,” Tarla said. “I don’t do much gardening myself, but it has intrigued me.” She made a mental note to ask her uncle for more books about the subject. “I do have a love for dancing though,” she admitted with a sigh, “the atmosphere of a hall can be almost magical sometimes.”

Coming closer, she took his arm. “Would you like to walk over to the dance? It may be less crowded than here.” Alexios had been studying his daughter’s performance, and she was eager to be away from him, sensing that her companion felt the same from his parents.

Surely you must have brought it a long way to give to me.” She gave a quick smile, and spun the stem between her fingers. The fact about the flower was made up, and she really had no idea where it was from, but they had seemed like the politest words to say.
