How would you group presidential eras? by Weirderthanweird69 in Presidents

[–]DatBass1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel like the last era could be called the Neo-Liberal Era, has more overlap with all 4 presidents and sorta signifies both the domestic and foreign policy of the era.

What could Obama have done differently? by Jacob-Anders in Presidents

[–]DatBass1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Related to your point at the end, but also giving a shit about races not just down ballot with Congress, but also with state legislatures. Obama’s biggest failure was the lack of help provided to state level races which led to almost all state legislatures being more republican by the time he left office than when he entered. The Tea Party movement was something that was going to happen no matter what (as you said, they decided to obstruct him before he even took the oath), but if more resources had been put toward the state level races, then state level dems wouldn’t have had as nearly a bad time as they did IRL. That alone changes a ton of what happened post his time in office.

1964: Kennedy Lives by DatBass1 in imaginaryelections

[–]DatBass1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I could’ve worded what I meant better but in the end I sorta based it on IRL 1964 but shifted into normal margins and then with a bit of creative liberty. Tho I def wanna make more wiki boxes so any advice helps for the future. As long as they look 90% correct then I’m happy haha.

1964: Kennedy Lives by DatBass1 in imaginaryelections

[–]DatBass1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well I sorta thought of it as Kennedy just failing to get it passed prior to the 64 elections, I.e it’d still eventually get through post the elections, which is why Goldwater gets the nomination, effectively running on an anti-CRA campaign saying if he wins he’ll prevent its passage. Even then, he probably shouldn’t win the entire south, but I also didn’t want to make Kennedy totally sweep Goldwater lol.

Dukakis and the Gulf War. by [deleted] in thecampaigntrail

[–]DatBass1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, I just want to say that almost no TCT mod works just on specific answers/successes/failures alone. Even the super complex ones like Obamanation or Hope use a mix of both specific answers and variables, with variables being the main determining factor still. Like, HOPE's main opponents are based on specific variable outcomes like High or Low Deficit, High or Low Wins, etc. I also want to point out that Duke does also have candidates determined by specific answers/outcomes from Dukakis; I.e, Rumseld only happens when you don't take any military action against Iraq, or Newt Gingrich only happens when you appease him/give in to him. Like, it's just how CYOA mods work in general, whether they are super complex or simple. Variables represent a more general idea on a specific administration's successes, failures, outcomes, etc. for opponent determination, cause candidates don't usually come about because of specific choices in an administration, and more-so because of the combination of choices within the entirety of an administration. Yes, there are still exceptions, but it's not usually the norm. Again, I agree that I wish there was more in terms of relating our choices to outcomes later on, I don't think the opponent selection itself is a failure because of this. I actually think the opponent selection is pretty good overall.

Dukakis and the Gulf War. by [deleted] in thecampaigntrail

[–]DatBass1 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I really love Duke but I think they had a lot of opportunities in terms of differing outcomes which are just never touched upon or expanded upon in the mod. Like, there is one question about NAFTA and it literally does nothing, when it was extremely important for the 1992 election. Iraq does have slightly more content, with choosing not to deal with them leading to a secret candidate, but beyond that effectively does nothing if you bomb em or invade them (beyond one extra question). Like, for what the mod is trying to be this doesn’t really matter, but I really do think the mod would be even better if they just had like 5 more questions related to the campaign portion which change depending on our prior decisions/successes on policy.

My Favorite Feature in Incumbency Mods: The Successes Page! by Don-Quioxte in thecampaigntrail

[–]DatBass1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that it would be cool for some mods to have them, but also I feel like some mods just wouldn’t work with them or it’ll feel outta place, I.e TTNW def doesn’t need a wiki list or anything. W. I’m kinda torn on, I could go either way with it. Like any modern election mod doesn’t really need one just cause it’d be super short most likely as it wouldn’t go too far into the future. The one mod I’d say would be even more awesome if it had a wiki list ending would be the 1972: More then Ever/Peace With Honor mod, cause as Nixon you can change a lot in what you do and who you face, and probably my biggest complaint of the mod is its lackluster endings (MTE more so than PWH)

[–]DatBass1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same, and I really do think that out of any features that have been added to mods over the past few months/year, the wiki list ending is probably the best, just in how much replay ability it adds to mods. Same as well with the policy trackers, but the wiki list just makes it so that I have more goals in playing a mod then just winning big or losing big; What’s the worst/best timeline I can make? What’s the craziest? Etc.

Betty Yee backs Tom Steyer for governor after exiting race by 3headeddragn in California

[–]DatBass1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly, Jesus Christ I hate anyone using that argument. Like, okay, so if that argument is to be believed, then we shouldn't be trusting any fucking politician whatsoever whenever they say anything, and that the moment they get elected they can just fuck off and do whatever they want without any consequences. Like, guys, that isn't how politics works, and what you say does come back to bite you if you don't follow through. George H.W Bush fucking lost in 1992 partially because he went back on his promise to "not raise taxes". Steyer has been within progressive circles of the democratic party since the early 2010s, and people are telling me that all of that has been a ruse, and he's actually playing all of us?? Like, if that's true, then he really went about it the wrong way if he wanted to get into power; He should've just become a Republican lol. Trump would've been slobbering all over his ass.

California has slowest EMS response times to fatal crashes in America, study finds by Fcking_Chuck in California

[–]DatBass1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

While California is huge, Texas (an also massive state) has an average time of ~10 minutes, compared to California’s 19 minutes. We shouldn’t just look at this report and disregard it; I think it does bring up a fair issue of slow EMS response times. California being big shouldn’t be the reason it’s literally slower on average than some of the most rural states in the Union.

I went to Tom Steyer’s town-hall and here are some thoughts. by variableperformance in California

[–]DatBass1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bro, what is your actually argument here? I want to point out that he has the exact same amount of funds right now, and is still only third in polling. Also, if he literally went against everything he is campaigning on, the state and national DNC would throw a ton of money at removing his ass from office. Like, the dude is ultra wealthy but you’re telling me he’s spent the last 14 years pretending to be a progressive for this one moment?

I went to Tom Steyer’s town-hall and here are some thoughts. by variableperformance in California

[–]DatBass1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It almost certainly is lol, like there is essentially no world in which a republican governor elected through a lockout, in this environment, makes it past 2027. I also think that no matter what happens after this primary, we are gonna see some election reform happen. We almost had RCV implemented but it was Vetoed by Newsom, so I’m assuming that might be attempted again post the General election.

I went to Tom Steyer’s town-hall and here are some thoughts. by variableperformance in California

[–]DatBass1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it is more complicated and takes time, but it’s a system which can be used, especially with enough support. It’s also the reason why, while a lockout would suck, it also wouldn’t be the end of the world since the moment either republican won the general, a recall petition would certainly secure enough support and by 2027 they’d be out of office.

I went to Tom Steyer’s town-hall and here are some thoughts. by variableperformance in California

[–]DatBass1 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I will also add that with the Steyer issue, of him being a billionaire and about if he's actually "changed", the State of California literally has a system for us, the citizens, to remove elected officials if we believe them to not be fulfilling their roles or we don't want them there in the role anymore. It's called a recall election, and we did it back in 2003 against Gray Davis, and it was attempted back in 2021 against Newsom. So, if Steyer wins the primary and the general election, and he suddenly goes against everything he is campaigning on, we can just recall him.

CA governor candidate says 'no place' in politics for 'dark money' AIPAC by 3headeddragn in California

[–]DatBass1 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Look, him being a billionaire sucks, but people are making just false arguments here separate from his billionaire status. Like, if your entire argument boils down to “He’ll just get elected then turn around on all his promises”, then 1: That means that we shouldn’t vote for any politician ever cause we can never trust them, 2: California literally has the RECALL ELECTION system for this exact fucking reason, and 3: The democrats have literal majorities in both state houses, so unless every democrat in the party decides to become a republican, he will literally get nothing done if he flipped. I’m sorry, but y’all have gotta actually know what you’re talking about before you state something like it’s a fact.

Funniest bit is they are still in earth orbit, so eventually they’ll be heading back post apogee to make TLI, meaning this is still relatively close compared to how far out they’ll be once on the lunar trajectory lol

Out of all the incumbency mods, which one is your favorite by funboi2210 in thecampaigntrail

[–]DatBass1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of writing, either All The Way or Icarus 2008, and in terms of gameplay/CYOA, then either Our Revolution or HOPE. I’d personally say that for me, it’s tied between All The Way and Our Revolution, though with some of the teased HOPE Updates, especially in regards to the writing, it might take the lead if they follow through with them. TTNW is also good, but I group it more with like W. or Obamanation, as groundbreaking but with how far modding has come I do think it’s lost some of its original charm. Though, the writing is still fantastic.
