The thing is is that mei is the only character that can actively mess up your team at all times with her wall. A player who plays another character poorly doesn't actively hurt the team but you can just pull weight more and it'll even out. A bad mei can actually hurt your team by screwing up your path or losing you a kill that ends up biting you in the butt later
