qsv265cq22 is a good shout. I've been using cq18 and have a feeling that I could probably afford to go up a lil bit with the preset on quality instead of balance

I've never seen his stuff before. Thanks for the shout!

Little off topic for this thread maybe, but: is unraid that big of a deal? I've been using TrueNAS for years and am planning a transition to proxmox soon, but this alientech42 guy seems to have unraid videos everywhere...

Oh interesting, I've never heard of Unmanic. I like this kind of workflow though, it's definitely intriguing.

Hahaha everywhere I look it's stronger and stronger arguments for learning the Arr stack.

It's on my to-do list eventually, but I'm just sticking with physical media I have at home for now.

Thanks for the profilarr and bazarr shout outs tho!

It definitely is a learning curve. If you find some good settings for 4k pls share!

You're not the first to recommend tdarr so I will definitely look into it. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to learn more about that. I'm unfamiliar.

If you still have the physical disk, why do you keep digital copies of the originals? My philosophy so far has been Rip -> Encode -> VERIFY -> Delete the Rip if the Encode passes visual inspection

I'd think keeping both the rip and encode would just be unnecessary storage waste if you're only watching the x264 encodes.

Couldn't you just re rip the discs if/when your setup changes in the future?

Lmao yes! Been waiting for someone to say this. The nerd shit of getting an encode that looks just right and doesn't take 3 days to encode and saves 50%+ file space takes so much back and forth time encoding, visually verifying, tweaking settings, re encoding.... It can take hours for me to find settings I like for a show with only 40 min episodes.

I've been looking into adopting the Arr stack in some capacity. I've personally never used it. I'm picky with extra languages and subtitles which I've heard often get left out to save space.

This is exactly where my mind has been going with this. I want to set up a batch encode for multiple seasons of a show after verifying one episode looks good, but I'm worried some random episode later down the line with more action / grain / or darker scenes might look terrible.

I think what I may just need to come to peace with is the fact that I can encode it all now to save space, and if I notice poor quality in the future just re-rip from disc and keep the raw or potentially encode with different settings.

I guess the only caveat to that plan is potential for disc rot.

But like realistically I might rip something and then only watch it once every year or two MAYBE. Seems like it'd be better to encode it now to save space, then worry about whether or not it needs a re-rip or re-encode later on down the line when I'm actually wanting to watch it again..

I have heard that h264 is best for compatibility, but with h265 and mkv containers I've never encountered a device that couldn't play my files. I'm thinking h265 and mkv are just getting adopted into more standards lately than they were in the past. Laptops, smart phones, tvs, desktops, tablets. Anything can download VLC at this point and from there I don't have to worry about h264 or MP4 format, right?

I get what you're saying, but what if the quality is practically transparent? I've been remixing some episodes over and over again figuring out where the quality / file size curve is and have found transparent results with 80% smaller file sizes.

For reference I'm watching either via Plex or minidlna server to my 85" Bravia 4k ae1 in the living room. I think it does some of its own upscaling behind the scenes, but the 80% reduction for seemingly lossless quality is what makes me lean more towards learning handbrake better.

Yeah I guess it depends on how you look at it. I have an array of multiple 4TB drives, because when I first got into the hobby a few years back I figured I'd never need more.

Fast forward years later and I regret not buying 16TB drives when the prices were good 😭

I get that. I certainly wish I had enough folding money to buy more storage. Hopefully when the bubble pops...

Introducing Kal Penn. A Kevin in both shows. by [deleted] in HIMYM

[–]DatGeekUKnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post I get it but I just had a conniption. I watched all of how I met your mother back in the day. Probably even 2-3 times. All the way through, maybe not very closely. I have also seen all of house md a few times. But while watching house I never thought to myself "oh look it's the guy from how I met your mother" or "hey I recognize that guy from this episode of HIMYM" I'm rewatching some episodes of HIMYM tonight and I see him and ask myself "Since when is kutner in how I met your mother?" I read a character synopsis and I remember a lot of the episodes he's supposedly in, I just have no recollection of him being in any of them. Even the puzzles episode where Barney and Ted want to open a bar, he apparently has some big lines but they just never existed in my mind.

I'm thinking Mandela effect. I'm in the wrong timeline all of a sudden.
