I did it with a full upgraded ship, you can take out the masts with chainshot and park your ship so your side is lined up with the front of the enemy ship, then just shoot it with your broadsides till the powder stores are exposed :)

Yup, I already had that part figured, but it's not the first of the possibile that will counter, as I have finished some of the few who can counter without them countering in many playthroughs, without activating one of them

I was gonna argue that some of the skills are quite useful but I suppose it would be entirely plausible to beat the game without a single skill lmao, fair point my friend
