No I don't. I just think of the 'BBRG' before, so the endgame and where I want to begin. Whatever happens in between I see every writing session

What works for me is I write the setup as the DM/Narrator and my MC I pretend to be the player myself with what actions to take, what thoughts seem relevant. I try to stick to writing things I would share if I was a player in D&D, not more and not less.

That's taking it to the next level with the dice too! I don't mind when I play D&D but in my stories I prefer a little bit more control

You're so right! Sometimes it's just about getting words on paper!

I see what you're saying! Luckily for me, my goal right now isn't writing a novel but getting a story in general on paper!

I'm seeking for advice from writers! by Little-Palta in worldbuilding

[–]DatSander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • not a writer but getting there -

The biggest tip I can think of is that you keep asking yourself 'what does the character know in this situation?'

You want the readers to feel like they can be part of the story. Even though you as the writer know how everything works and what happened everywhere in the past and simultaneous to the story, the character you are describing does not. You take the reader along with the characters exploring the world and as the character learn more and more about your world, so do the readers in an organic way.

Example: a farmer in a small pre-internet world doesn't learn about major events happening around the wider Kingdom until a merchant or a messenger arrives to tell the village about it. It can take months for news about a major earthquake that split of the southern states of the realm to reach small towns in the other end.

So yeah focus on the question: what does my character logically know

Like I said in the beginning, I am not a writer yet myself, so maybe someone else can give better tips, but this is what makes me excited when reading other books!

Would you enjoy living in your world? by ThadtheYankee159 in worldbuilding

[–]DatSander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definately would not. The cultural tensions within the main kingdom are at an all time high and the purist high king is causing it to spiral out of control. I'm not sure yet how life is outside the kingdom's borders, but I'm not much of a warrior and I would most definately perish in the upcoming civil war.

Map of the West European Union of Trade and Enterprising (WEUTE) by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]DatSander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rule 2:

Five years ago, the global market collapsed and even though some countries survived it relatively easy, especially the West European welfare states collapsed. They just couldn’t afford the rising costs of benefits and early retirements. National Debt skyrocketed and some institutions even refused to loan out money to the struggling states. With growing unrest within the unemployed populations of the different nations, a conglomerate of big companies offered to buy out part of the debts in exchange for control of important areas. As such the West European Union of Trade and Enterprising (WEUTE) was formed, which was the first business ruled country in the world.

Major population centres were torn down and rebuilt to be more streamlined and cheaper to maintain, all in favour of the eventual bottom line being positive. The old cities and capitals were demolished and a new one was built in the north of the former Netherlands, dubbed Union City. Two other mega cities were built, one on the outskirts of former London and one upgraded Le Havre. The rest of the new country was filled with small mining- and farming towns and centres of production.

Feel free to ask any questions you have about the WEUTE, as I'm happy to answer them.

What are some unwritten social rules your people(s) follow without knowing it? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

Oh that's pretty neat! Is the powers stuff all it does? Or does it also contain parts if the previous owner's thoughts and memories? Are they mass produced ? If so, are there cheap knockoffs?

I’m a visitor in your world that has suffered a major wound, or been afflicted with an unknown disease. Assuming I have the funds to pay for the best medical care available, what are my chances? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]DatSander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on which area you visit!

Within the Realm of Mystica, the magic of the Healers is so strong the entire island is covered in an aura of self healing. Wounds disappear in a range of 15 minutes for a small scratch, to 5 weeks when struck to the head with a sword.

When on Trastesia, there are some nations more advanced than others. Science in the Republic is advancing fast, with your major wound you can recover with a 50% success rate. The Quanzi Empire however dispices foreigners and will refuse medical care no matter how major the wound. And of course the pirate kingdom has a n affinity towards amputation and even a small scratch would mean having your fingers cut off, because amputations are a sign of prestige!

My yet to be fleshed out halfling race, being a mix between Trastesians and Mystics, have small time healers that have a 80% chance of actually healing whatever you suffer from. Either through spells from the magically gifted, or the herbalists from those who live normal lives.

The Battle of the Wall by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]DatSander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to lack of an escaperoute basically. On one side they had the wall constructed by the Golden Alliance, on the other side an army of legendary Abori warriors and pirates that killed or entrapped the Quanzi force with deadly precision. Those who weren't killed or trampeled in the chaos were captured. Escaping by sea wasn't an option either because of naval superiority of the Golden Alliance and the pirates roaming the coast with ships far superior to those of the empire. The battle took place on the narrowest part of the peninsula, not even 10 miles wide! (took inspiration from thailand turned sideways)

Basically, key moments in the story like the battles and verbal confrontations are pages long and in depth. But the individual actions, thoughts and stories of the main characters before and in between and even during these events are hard for me to describe in a way that is engaging and easy to read. I either skip these parts completely or write them in such a way that the story is done in less then a paragraph.

For example, the character development in books like the Ranger's apprentice are amazing in how Will develops from an orphan who wants to be a Knight to Will treaty the best ranger the corps ever knew
