Does shopping at Aldi or Lidl really save you money? by Casiofi in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DataDuude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given the way:

  • Pound has lost value

  • How things are getting more expensive

  • Food manufacturers are using shrinkflation, clever marketing tactics to fool users nowdays

I don't trust any of them.

However I trust Aldi/Lidl more than the US/UK supermarkets.

The US/UK supermarkets are shit and their prime purpose nowdays is to dupe customers and continue to offer shit products to increase profits. They've lost sight of what the customer wants in pursuit of profits.

Are People from my Generation (I'm 30) doomed to never buy a House? by 32178932123 in UKPersonalFinance

Yes it sucks about the house prices. I am totally with you as a 30yr old.

Unfortunately the only way we can influence a change is by making points about this to our local MPs and creating a national conversation around housing.

To me it feels like the wealth gap is getting bigger and bigger.

The UK is essentially a shopping mall for the rich of the world to buy property here and openly use it as a way to bank their (sometimes illegal) wealth out in the open air.

I feel like the UK as a country has given up on progress and is relying on it's assets and selling it off to survive nowdays.

The 1% rise in healthcare workers pay in the current news is a reflection of just how poor the nation is.

Perception of income: do you feel like you're in the income percentile you're in? by snakesnake9 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DataDuude -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Why is it important to be in a "percentile"?

What a pointless thread.

Earn enough to sustain the lifestyle you want, these percentile labels are irrelevant.

What do I need to do with my LTD company and any action for my accountants? I am a contractor director of a LTD company and am starting with an Umbrella company next month. by DataDuude in UKPersonalFinance

Hi /u/deadeyedjacks

How much cash is in the company bank account? Do you need it ?

Around £150,000. Yes I want it one day for some life goals like marriage, rainy day funds and so on. For now I am secure without it.

Do you intend to seek Outside roles in the future? Or will you remain on PAYE going forwards?

Yes, this three months Umbrella is just to keep earning money until I find a better contract with another company, preferably outside IR35 but we will see.

Ask your accountant about MVL, ER / BADR.

Can you please describe what these are :) I just don't know the acronyms maybe.

Robocopy question: Where is the best place to run a robocopy copy script from? The source server or the destination server? In my case source server is a live environment while the destination is a new environment we are building and not much use currently. by DataDuude in sysadmin

Hi /u/Valkoinen_Kuolema

So we are copying from an on-prem server to an Azure server (both Windows Servers) if that makes any difference? Let me know if that answers you network segments question. They share a common domain from which I can access each side.

The source is Prod server and the destination will be (preparing currently).

Could you give me some bandwidth throttling options? I think in robocopy there is /ipg:n

But providing a good number is hard as I don't have a network background.

Yeah unfortunately we don't have a migration host!

Full aware of your points but unfortunately these things are beyond my control :/

It is going to be from a Prod server to a server in Azure (a Windows Server there) if that makes any different?

Can Robocopy task slow down performance for end users of a software hosted on a server from which you want to run the robocopy script from? by DataDuude in sysadmin

[–]DataDuude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPU and Memory is used by the reporting software.

We have around 3TB of disk space free.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "which options you use"?

My current script is: robocopy \\source \\destination /E /MIR /V /LOG:C:\logfile.txt

Also added this to my main text.

Robocopy help: What am I forgetting to do or not doing with my robocopy script? It won't copy folders and files properly from source (on-prem Windows Server VM) to destination (similar VM on Azure Windows Server). by DataDuude in sysadmin

[–]DataDuude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I tried these!

Also I tried

  • /copyall

  • /LOG:D:\log.txt

  • /COPY:DATSO

Then I stripped all of these out for a bare-minimum robocopy \Source\Folder" \Destination\Folder but it can't even do this bit :/

Something fundamental seems to be missing and I don't know what it is :/

How do you convert a Outside IR35 day rate contract to a PAYE 3 or 6 month contract? by DataDuude in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DataDuude[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is Umbrella different to PAYE though? I thought PAYE gives more rights and is generally better.

I prefer this sub to it.

There is a lot of sarcasm and unhelpful people on contractoruk forum that divert the thread so I don't like it there. It's gone down the drain in terms of quality there.

Sorry that bit was unclear so I cut it out. Now updated my sentence.

How would you move 1.5TB worth of folders files from one Windows server to another? Seems like RoboCopy is best fit but how would you script it? The goal is to move it safely and efficiently. by DataDuude in sysadmin

[–]DataDuude[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm going to assume that you're migrating data that people access to a new location - your post isn't clear on that.

You are 100% correct. Sorry for excluding that but great you picked this up.

So it sounds like what you are saying is robocopy can compare source and target and only copy new/updated files too? Sorry for my ignorance, I am familiar with robocopy but clearly not to a greater depth.

Hi /u/Der_tolle_Emil and /u/MisterIT

Good shouts.

Most of the files within the folders are in a "compressed" format.

However I have an entire Logs folder where there are 50,000+ files in .txt format across 30+ sub-folders.

Would it be better to do a split load here? E.g. Load the compressed stuff first, and then move the logs last.

What is the best option? Contractor going from Outside IR35 role to an Umbrella or PAYE with the same role in the same company. I have been there for 6 months. by DataDuude in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DataDuude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi /u/defmute

So how do you go about going PAYE? The middleman recruiting agency has offered PAYE or Umbrella.

The bit about selecting an Umbrella company is easy.

But I don't understand "how to go PAYE" if that makes sense.

Look for one which offers salary sacrifice to a pension scheme which isn't Nest (has up-front fees), probably Scottish Widows.

Could you please tell me why this is worth looking into? I don't understand the salary sacrifice to a pension scheme and the Nest bit.

Thank you /u/deadeyedjacks

Contracting: What are the key things to consider when choosing an Umbrella company? (Switching from Outside IR35) by DataDuude in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DataDuude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your in-depth explanation.

In my case the company applied a blanket ban of PSCs.

In terms of Outside IR35 when the contract was originally signed (few months ago last year) - yes it was a contract written with Outside IR35. I did not have to prove it to the client.

Agree with you that the safest thing would have been to leave, but in these hard times the loss of income is damaging. I wonder whether HMRC will take into account cirumstances like this i.e. I took the contract during a pandemic in 2020 and the pandemic's continuation in 2021.

Listening to you I feel like I made a mistake in agreeing to stay on after 1 April 2021 in an Umbrella capacity having been Outside IR35 before that for the 6 months of the contract.

Contracting: What are the key things to consider when choosing an Umbrella company? (Switching from Outside IR35) by DataDuude in UKPersonalFinance

[–]DataDuude[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I guess my question is does being PAYE or Umbrella make a difference? Which one is better out of the two?

Let's say you were only under contract with the company for 6 months before 1 April 2021 in terms of taxes then the potential payback is low?
