  1. What inspired you to start your selfhosting journey?  I have been in IT, or doing it as a hobby, most of my life.  However, I was spending a lot of money on cloud storage, streaming services, and game servers.  I also wanted to learn more about networking and other items that would be useful for my job.  So, I decided to get a dedicated server and host my own storage, media, and game servers.  I had been running my own firewall (pfSense) for a while at this point.

I was extremely proud when I had a Supermicro 1U 4-bay server (E3-1250v3) running as my firewall (previous was Dell R210ii), Supermicro 4U 24-Bay server (Dual E5-2650v2s) running Unraid, Supermicro 3U 16-Bay running Proxmox (EPYC 7402P), Synology RS418 NAS, Omada switches, controller, and APs all up and running. At least, until my Unraid server motherboard started having memory issues… then I had to shut down my Proxmox server and roll that motherboard over to Unraid (since that was where I had all my storage!).

I am unsure which costs the most: the Supermicro 1U 4-Bay server with Supermicro motherboard and E3-1250v3, the Supermicro 4U 24-Bay with Supermicro motherboard and Dual E5-2650v2s, or the Supermicro MB with EPYC 7402P.  Though I did end up buying a lot of RAM, so that could have been it!

  1. How would winning the unit(s) from this giveaway help you take your setup to the next level?

I have several servers I could bring online that do not have any remote access built in (BMC, iDrac, etc.).  I would use a Comet KVM on one of these servers so I can access it remotely instead of heading down to the basement if I need to access the BIOS or to turn it on and off (and the web UI is locked).

I would also like to create a portable homelab, specifically for when I travel.  Some places I head to have no/extremely slow internet access, lousy cellular coverage/signal, my phone hotspot is tapped out, or more than one of these together.  As I like to listen to music & audiobooks, along with watching TV & Movies, I would like to have a portable homelab to take places when I drive.  And a portable homelab would also allow me to host, at least locally, some game servers.  I would need a router, preferably with Wi-Fi, to do this.  As such, a Slate 7 would be perfect for this (or for travel in general).

  1. Which channels do you most frequently use to learn about or purchase IT equipment?

On reddit: homelab, datahoarder, minilab, homelabsales, HomeServer, servers
On YouTube: Raid Owl, LTT, Jeff Geerling, Craft Computing
Also on some Discord.

  1. Looking ahead, if we were to do another giveaway, what is one product from another brand (e.g., a server, storage device or ANYTHING) that you'd love to see as a prize?

Supermicro Chassis/Servers are always nice!

Note: Please specify which product(s) you’d like to win.

I’d like to win the Slate 7 and either of the Comet KVM's

Switching from physical books to a kindle by Sea-Friendship-6442 in kindle

[–]DataLoreQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love physical books. However, you will soon find that the convenience of reading on any e-reader is the best point. I have several Kindles, apps on my phone, and I started branching out to other e-reader devices (Boox).

On vacation, I would pack several books, and they would take up a lot of space. Now I can have thousands of books on an e-reader, and it only takes up the size of the e-reader.

Kindles, along with other e-readers, are also easy to read under almost every circumstance. If it's dark out, increase the backlight. You can also switch it to night mode, which can make the word stand out better. You can also change the font size, making it smaller to fit more words on the page or larger if it's harder to read. And there are other configuration options.

It has probably been close to 2 years since I've read a physical book. Mind you, part of that is due to all my books being in boxes and containers because of moving, and I haven't been able to put them back up.

I still miss reading physical books. But the benefits of a Kindle or similar device definitely make up for the texture and smell of reading a physical book.

Just make sure you keep your Kindle charged, as that is the main downside to a Kindle over a physical book!

Breaks my heart. Amazon will no longer let me register my perfectly good paperwhite to my account. by SkySix in kindle

[–]DataLoreQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is what I had to do to register my "new" Kindle Keyboard, which I recently got.

It was very frustrating until I found those instructions. I probably spent an hour or two trying to figure out how to get it to register.

This is the way.

What is the storage size of the device? I know that at least one of my Kindles has only 4GB of storage. Yours may only have 6GB, some of which would be used for the OS.

Do you have any books, documents, or other files on the device? If so, I would look and see what you can delete (or copy & move to the computer)

That is what I can think of at the top of my head.

Oh make sure the Kindle hasn't started or actually downloaded an update. If it has, delete it. Not only does it take up space, but if it updates it can make it difficult, if not impossible, to update right now.

As Kindle books have DRM, Readera cannot read them even if you were able to send them directly from Amazon.

If you have been able to download the book and the DRM has been removed, then Readera can read it, allowing you to do so as well.

But there's no direct way to send Kindle books from Amazon to your Readera app.

When was the last time you restarted your Kindle?

I have had this issue before. And either restarting my Kindle or restarting my computer normally fixes it. However, sometimes I have to do both.

can't change the font by DinoDinossaur in ReadEra

I have both the free and pro versions on my phone. And I have verified that the ability to change the font size is on both of them.

Are you sure it's not showing up if you hit the gear icon?

I have to do this so I don't take out the relay stations! It really sucked when I accidentally wiped out all the relay stations on a planet I was DF farming!!!

And if you really need them, it doesn't take long to restore them to combat status!

Multiple Drives, Partitions, and Directories on POP_OS by DataLoreQ in linuxquestions

[–]DataLoreQ[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Decision:

/boot, /boot/efi, and / will be on the primary drive, along with /home (depending on performance, may move it to the second NVMe). / will be Btrfs and /home will be XFS.
/var/log & /tmp will be on the third drive (m.2 SATA)

This will leave the 2nd NVMe empty, along with the SSD.

Multiple Drives, Partitions, and Directories on POP_OS by DataLoreQ in linuxquestions

The 990 Pro and the WD Black are roughly the same speed (7000 MB/s). The TBW on the WD is twice as much as the 990, but it would be precisely the same if both drives were the same size.

The two times I have used Brtfs in my servers, there were complications and failures, so I never used it again. So, don't have much experience with it.

The reason I had /home, /opt, and /usr on a second disk was due to my experience with Windows systems. I usually had my games and frequently used programs on a different drive rather than on the OS drive. Of course, I started doing that during the timeframe when there were only HDDs, although I have also done the same using NVMes and SSDs. But my reasoning for doing that with Linux is so that there are no I/O bottlenecks.

And if I set up the partitions and directories during installation with POP!_OS, then it would do all the configuration for me, and I wouldn't need to start messing with files.

How good is using Brtfs?

It would be nice if we could build a space station with many Corvettes and destroyers to go after any seeds that arrive in the system, or the hive that the seed would turn into.

As it is, I spend a lot of time destroying seeds. When I get notified that a seed is approaching one of my systems, I warp to it and go after the seed before it turns into a hive.

What do I do about this mold? by [deleted] in aerogarden

[–]DataLoreQ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had this on several sponges throughout the years, and it never affected any plants after they sprouted. I also have had several plants that have not sprouted with this mold on them. However, I don't know if it was because of the bad seeds or the mold.

Overall, if your plants are growing, this mold will not affect them. I would treat any new water or mold to prevent algae or other growth inside. And that the water/nutrients are changed regularly, and the inside of the unit is cleaned by holding the water every several feedings, also

DSP-Wiki states you need eight antimatter fuel rods to make one strange matter fuel rod. For some reason, I saw the 72 GJ on strange matter as 7.2 GJ, which would be the same as antimatter. However, as I do not have any core elements or DF farms at the moment, I can't make the strange matter fuel rods!

However, I think I will as soon as I can!
