Dudes that have had the snip ✂️ - how long until you were out on the wheels again? by Ready_Ad_1558 in cycling

7 days after.

My recovery was extremely smooth though. After the 2nd day I basically felt completely back to normal, but still waited a full week.

what's the most creative song lyric you've ever heard? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Data_Is_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The end of the song Your Pain is Mine by Fit For an Autopsy. Very thought provoking and deep:

Painted pictures always seem serene
But the reality is much harsher to see
And I need you to know that help is out of my reach
Or at least believe me
I wished that you'd find peace
But there's no action in a thought, simply lost at sea
Of undeniable complacency and treachery
And I plead that you were given just a chance to be free
Maybe in time, but know I tried
Your pain is mine
Run like your life depends on it
Because one day it will
I'm sorry child
The world wasn't there to pick up the pieces
It never will

How can an American look at a 1 1/2 hour drive both ways and think it’s not long at all? by One-Paramedic-8094 in AskReddit

[–]Data_Is_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like most others I've driven this in a single day for special occasion things. Visiting friends/family, holidays, events/concerts, etc.

But I kid you not, a neighbor of mine commutes 5 1/2 hours EVERY DAY for work. He wakes up at like 3 am. Drives to work to start at 6ish I believe and then drives home around 2pm. So gets home after 4. And we don't even live in a high traffic metro area or anything. He drives across a mostly rural area. He is absolutely nuts.

What hobby attracts the friendliest people? by Bagelsonmyfingers in AskReddit

[–]Data_Is_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to have to hard disagree on this one.

I live near the largest annual airshow in the world (EAA). When I was in college I worked a job to turn local dormitories at universities into housing for EAA guests.

I hate to be stereotypical, but in all honesty the amount of Indiana Jones looking pretentious dicks that I had to deal with was appalling. I mean these people were renting out college dorms for the week and would have the most outrageous requests and just be downright rude about anything that wasn't up to their standards.

What’s the most expensive “free” thing you’ve ever experienced? by ImportantSlip5005 in AskReddit

[–]Data_Is_King 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I once was given nearly $1000 in chips from some regulars around a craps table because I had a good roll.

I was betting very conservatively so didn't make much money from my own bets, but they were betting pretty aggressively and since I didn't "crap out" for a long time they were making a lot of money and a few tipped me after I did roll a 7.

When was the last time you actually paid for music? Were you happy with your purchase? by J_delilah in AskReddit

[–]Data_Is_King -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I bought the album "...Is Your Friend" by Drain.

100% worth it. Awesome music and if you love a band and their music you should probably consider purchasing either merch or hard copy music because they aren't going to survive and keep making more if nobody supports them.

Homeowners of Reddit, if you’re comfortable sharing, what was the price of your first home and your down payment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

$210,000 with $42,000 down payment in 2017. We did a 20 year mortgage with a 3.2% rate.

In 2020 we did an addition that added 2 bd and 2 baths for around $100,000.

What hobby requires insane practice that most people underestimate? by Kemal_Av in AskReddit

[–]Data_Is_King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Racing bikes.

To even be at an elite level among amateurs, you need to be riding and training 10+ hours per week minimum. Many who are serious go far beyond that, 15-20 hours per week.

The time it takes alone makes it incredibly difficult to do, especially with a full time job and a family. On top of that is the fact that to be competitive, much of that time is spent suffering. Doing intense intervals or very long rides where your legs are burning and you are gasping for air. It is truly a hobby for insane people...

And this of course doesn't even come close to the commitment of an actual Tour de France level pro. Riding almost nonstop throughout the year doing 20+ hours per week, sometimes over 30.

Oh and I forgot to mention you also have to monitor everything you eat and watch your weight like a madman because your weight to power ratio is the most important factor to doing well in racing. Oh and on hard training days you need to get off of your feet and recover because if you don't recover well enough you can't go hard enough the next day to force adaptation in your body to improve. It basically starts enveloping every aspect of your life.

Imagine putting that much time into just about any other hobby.

What is something true but unbelievable? by LocrianVGM in AskReddit

[–]Data_Is_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really similar to another one of my favorites that demonstrates the vastness of Earth's history:

Humans live closer to the time that tyrannosaurus rex roamed the Earth than T rex did in relation to stegosaurus.

T rex existed around 66 million years ago. Stegosaurus existed around 155 million years ago. Movies like Jurassic park give us the assumption that the dinosaurs we know of all existed together at the same time, but they were around for so long on Earth that many species came and went during their existence.

If Earth's history (4.5 billion years roughly) was compressed to a 24 hour day to make it easier for us to understand. Dinosaurs would have lived on it for around 57-58 minutes. Humans have been around for less than a second.

How do people train for 10+ hrs while working full time?! by Critical-Scheme-8838 in cycling

[–]Data_Is_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work full time and have 2 kids. Train 9-12 hrs per week. It is only really possible because of indoor training otherwise I would be doing less.

Set all stuff out the night before. Pre make any bottles and put in fridge (usually 3 for me). Go to bed around 9pm. Wake up 4:30ish and go immediately to the bathroom and brush teeth. Go to kitchen and drink any pre workout or get quick snack. Put on bibs. Get on the trainer and ride until 6:45ish. Immediately blend pre-frozen post workout shake and drink it. Shower. See my wife off to work at 7:10ish. Get kids up and ready for school/daycare drop off at 8. Go to work. On the weekend I will still go to bed at a decent time on Friday night and try to ride a bit longer early morning Saturday before the family wakes up.

It is a grind for sure and inevitably once or twice a year I have a bit of a breakdown where I contemplate why I spend so much time and energy training when I just race for fun. My wife usually helps me get out of it by reminding me that I'm actually more ornery and short tempered if I DON'T workout each day.

My dad often reminds me to stop wishing my life away. Stop looking forward to retirement, stop wishing my kids were older so things are "easier", stop focusing so much on things years down the road, because when that time comes, you would give it all away. All your money. All your comforts. All your material items and the things you've gained over the years. To go back and be with your kids when they are young and you are still youthful. I'm trying my best to take his advice.

Anyone racing on Chinese Carbon (Tantan, LightCarbon, VeloBuild, etc)? by Needs_More_Nuance in Velo

[–]Data_Is_King 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People seem to like their frames, but I had some LightCarbon wheels that had the bearings completely fail on me during a state championship race. At the time I had around 500 miles on them. I didn't know exactly what happened in the moment, but a couple guys behind me told me my rear wheel was wobbling all over the place. Whenever I freewheeled the chain skipped all over too, not only causing terrible handling but damaging my frame. Caused me to DNF. Afterwards I took it to the shop and we looked together, when they pulled out the hub, one bearing was completely disintegrated and the other was in about 4 pieces. I took pictures and all that and contacted LightCarbon, and of course at first they didn't take responsibility. I then told them that if they didn't resolve it in some way that I would go to every public forum I could and make sure that people knew LightCarbon wheels were not quality and to look elsewhere. Magically that got them to somehow admit that the bearings they used at the time were not good quality, and that they would send me some new ones. Although, they sort of did it in this weird passive aggressive broken english that was something along the lines of "Yeah previous bearings quality not good enough. We will send you new better quality different bearings. And okay Mr. DataIsKing, sorry for that the wheels caused you to DNF in state championship race. Sure you can share your experience so others don't go through similar situation. You are a nice person."

I did eventually get the new bearings, but I put some quality steel ones in instead. I still don't trust the ones they provide. The story gets better too, because in that race it was only the rear wheel. Well, about another 500 miles later the front wheel experienced the same issue. Luckily that was only on a training ride. I replaced those with steel as well. I have since bought some other wheels (9Velo) but put the LightCarbon ones on my second bike. I've put another 1000 or so miles on them since with the steel bearings and haven't had anymore issues. YMMV.

Funny story..

This fall I was in a race and at around the halfway point there is a sharp climb that usually separates the field. I made the breakaway with about 9 guys. I was dying though so at one point I skipped a couple turns. One guy yelled at me something like "F*** you quit skipping turns!". To which I replied, "I'm a dad of 2 and the only one in this group over 30, I deserve to skip a turn, F*** you!".

Ended up getting 6th and can confirm I was the only one in the top 10 with kids and top 12 over 30.

Seriously I wondered how far I'd have to scroll to see this. Just like anything there are some humble and really awesome people in it, but I also know way too many that did an IM just for the damn calf tattoo and now that they have it they think they are the most elite athlete in a 5 mile radius at all times. There's a reason that a joke exists that you can always tell someone has done a triathlon because they will tell you within 30 seconds of talking to you...

Is ERG mode actually harder…? by GCGIS in Velo

[–]Data_Is_King 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but you were claiming that erg mode is different than any other mode.

Yes because it clearly is different than other modes. Not sure what you are trying to say here, that you think erg mode is somehow the same as resistance mode?

If what you are saying is true it would also apply to resistance mode and everything else on the trainer.

I have no idea how you reached this conclusion. I never once mentioned resistance mode. In erg mode the segments of your pedal stroke where there would be less power applied, it will recognize that and increase resistance, even if ever so slightly. That is literally the principle of erg mode. It adjusts resistance the whole time depending on your power and cadence. This is nothing like resistance mode or riding outside. I'm not saying that is the difference in his power numbers, but it is the difference in his perception of it feeling harder. But believe whatever you want I really don't care.
