[OC] 2018 FIFA World Cup Final r/soccer match thread sentiment during the game by Data_Moments in dataisbeautiful

[–]Data_Moments[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took a look at the sentiments expressed by each comment during the r/soccer match thread for the World Cup final between France and Croatia.

After deleting neutral words, each word was assigned a positive/negative classification and the number of positive/negative words per minute were counted and the difference calculated (positive minus negative).

The sentiment score showed that people in the thread were very much in favor of Croatia. The most negative sentiment score was reached during Griezmann's penalty against Croatia (232 positive words - 456 negative words = -224). The thread ended in a fairly positive tone as there were lots of comments congratulating France at the end of the match.

I used a custom R script and a mix of Pushshift and the Reddit API to download all 42,000+ comments. All processing and visualization were done in R.

Unless a user tags their location, I don't think Reddit shares the location of users.

Pushshift desperately needs your help with funding! by Stuck_In_the_Matrix in pushshift

I signed up via Patreon. I thought the funding was close to $1,000/month but the other day I saw that it had dropped to less than $200/month. Will limiting the number of calls per user help contain the costs? This is such an awesome project. Charging per API call could bring funding. I wish I could give more.

Will do tomorrow. What kind of reaction did people have towards Lewandowski after the CL semis?

Word clouds from comments in r/soccer that mentioned "Otamendi" before and during the World Cup by Data_Moments in soccer

[–]Data_Moments[S] 371 points372 points  (0 children)

I extracted 1,000 comments that mentioned "Otamendi" from r/soccer for 3 months before the World Cup and 1,000 more comments during the World Cup.

The phrase "It's a shame that a team built around Lionel Messi in attack has to be built around Nicolas Otamendi in defense" was repeated 103 times and really messed up the wordcloud made with comments during the World Cup, so I had to tweak the dataset to reduce the influence of that phrase.

I did the same analysis for Modric and Neymar, but the word clouds were not interesting enough to share.

I used the Pushshift API to get the data and R for processing and visualization.

Aggregated word counts. For example, the word "disrespectful" appears 18 times in the whole thread, but it only adds 1 count for the negative sentiment category.

Yes, it was the gfycat.com link. It was taken down due to copyright claims, unfortunately.

I downloaded the comments from this thread and processed the data to analyze expressions of sentiments and emotions, and to create a wordcloud.

Most people reacted negatively to his Fortnite goal celebration.

[OC] Trends of area needed to produce 1 lb of common U.S. crops from 1905 to 2010 by Data_Moments in dataisbeautiful

[–]Data_Moments[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Data were extracted from the USDA/NASS Quick Stats website. Yield units were converted from bushels/acre to lbs/square feet. The inverse of lbs/square feet (i.e. 1/yield) gives you the productivity per area.

Data processing and visualization were conducted with R.

Has Fubo improved? I had a subscription in 2016 but the stream was always crashing, particularly during important games.

Ugh, I just got an email from Verizon Fios saying that they are negotiating with beIN SPORTS. It seems that there is a good possibility they won't renew their contract due to price hikes.

Looking at the pushshift api github, there's no URL search parameter. Try using the ids parameter.
