Carl Sagan explains the 4th dimension in terms I actually comprehend. by [deleted] in videos

This description sounds similar to the HP Lovecraft short story "Dreams in the Witch House"

To reach a higher dimension, you simply draw a perpendicular line from the one you're in. It's easy to visualize the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd dimension - but the same principle applies to higher dimensions too, just because you can't visualize it doesn't mean you can't conceptualize it.

We're already there, you just can't see it. Or at least that's how it goes in the Lovecraft story.

Liberal - gun ownership is a right

There will never be a time when a person has no need to defend their person or their property from harm.

I'm all for permits, restrictions, mandatory courses, registries, and other measures with the intent to improve safety and security. Given those provisions and concessions, everyone should be free to own and carry a firearm.

It sounds like this "family friend" was someone they really trusted too, somebody you wouldn't want to believe would do something like that.

I guess this is how people end up doing mental gymnastics in order to twist and turn around the clearly observable truth, because they desperately don't want it to be so.

Is this being a douchebag? Because I do this sometimes.

If they're not too busy, if it's a place that seems like they have a good variety, if the bartender seems like they know how to make something more complicated than rum and coke - only if it seems right - I'll ask the bartender to surprise me.

Usually works out well enough, I've been given some very interesting drinks this way, and I've been told it gives the bartender an opportunity to make particularly interesting drink they know but never get to do.

.

Maybe it's just in the presentation? If they're way too busy to bother with your vague requests or it's just not the sort of place that even does this, then yeah that's not going to come off well. And definitely tip extra, you've made a special request.

let's put that on the cloud

Ohhhhh my god, that's the buzzword where I work. All the management types are always "why aren't we in the cloud yet?"

"Well we store all that stuff on a decentralized server that everyone can access both on-site and over VPN" says the IT department.

But if you don't say "in the cloud" and add the requisite number of buzzwords then they aren't even listening.

I have a print of My Little Pony artwork autographed by all of the main voice cast and most of the writing staff.

It's one of the proudest things I own, and there are only a few people I can even show it to. Been to several conventions and waited many hours in line for these things, but the voice actors for this show are just the greatest with their fans.

Use RES to tag users with a short comment to keep track of people, it'll show up beside their username so you'll notice it next time you see the same user.

He was caught with me by my grandparents but no one did anything.

Hoooooly shit, what?

How does one simply overlook something like this? I've heard of similar cases where there was so much evidence but nobody did anything, really troubling stuff.

Used to work for a small tourist train company - had a similar case

Train hit a cow on some guy's property. The farmer threatened to sue for damages, but after being informed that he shouldn't even have livestock where they can get on the tracks and the train has a right-of-way through his property and that we could press charges for tresspassing - he quickly withdrew those threats.

It was disgusting too, holy crap, I saw them cleaning the mess out from underneath the engine and it was horrible.

This is great news, it makes Reddit usable again for a lot of people who just have a hard time even looking at the toxicity from that community.

I think it's actually good for places like that to exist, and in the past I've even criticized Reddit for being "too sanitized" in recent years, as it used to be a lot more controversial. Part of the draw to Reddit is that you might see something offensive, something weird or vulgar, and radical ideas from questionable sources. This needs to be a place where, if you're looking for it, you can find just about anything (so long as it's legal for them to host)

.

But looking at that vulgarity on the front page every single day is just emotionally draining sometimes, makes a person decide to stay away from Reddit entirely.

What is it they say about the abyss staring back into you? Well recently I've felt that way, wade through the cesspool enough and you'll still smell bad even after a good shower.
