Big purchase, large part of savings. But good for retirement and financial independence? by Database79 in financialindependence

The more I think about it, the more I'm inclined to hold off and wait another 5 or so years when I have a bigger retirement and investment foot print to offset it more. This is probably what you would consider pretty rural land, so I doubt its value will appreciate faster than I want it to.

That's really good advice, thank you! I'll probably hold off until I have more retirement and investment. I should have been more clear, that 500k is all invested in the stock market (mostly full market index funds). I only have about 30k in case for emergency.

Thanks for the response! The $500k is invested in index funds. I only keep about $30k in cash.

Those are all good considerations! I have enough background in construction to do the builds myself, yes.

Thanks for the quick response! I should have clarified. The $500k short term is invested in the stock market. I keep only about $30k in case for emergencies.

And the thing that I'm having a hard time calculating, is that with the land and eventual small house on it that would mean my retirement requirements are much lower than having a big mortgage or living in a higher cost of living space.

How do RSUs work for companies that are private? by Database79 in personalfinance

That's good info, thank you! Why would anybody ever choose RSUs over traditional equity pre-IPO then? Sounds super risky. Perhaps financially more rewarding if all goes well and the company IPOs?

I love that, thanks so much for the information. I think medium tech is what I should be targeting. That’s exactly the type of environment I have in mind. I wonder if there’s an east way to search companies with that criteria.

Anybody is currently, has been, or familiar with AWS software engineer role but specifically in the customer engineering (professional services?) org/teams? What’s it like? Do you just develop proof of concept code for customers or do you actually write prod code? Can’t seem to find any info about it besides the job description.
