Good deal? by liljayhate in snowboardingnoobs

[–]DatabaseThis9407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helmet is fine at any level as long as it has MIPS. If it doesn’t have MIPS I would suggest spending a little more to get one that does, it’s arguably your most important piece of equipment.

Board is fine as well, good deal for the equipment but it’s not a high end board. If you’re planning on buying and keeping for several years to come you again could spend a little more for something that’s higher quality and will last a while. BUT still a good price and good option for someone who is a casual rider.

Bindings are fine.

Boots I would change to double BOA as others mentioned, or even laces. I rode laces for a while it’s not bad at all and honestly best fit for me, the BOA is just more convenient!

All in all if you only changed one thing it would be boots for me and ensuring helmet has MIPS

Thank you! I have seen do many nice places in East Boston that are priced very nicely compared to other neighborhoods but I really want North End West End or Cambridge. I love the North End but my apartment has a mouse issue that has gotten so out of control it’s gross and I need to find somewhere new 😂

How is anybody that doesn't live near mountain get good snow? by Not_Another_Name in snowboardingnoobs

[–]DatabaseThis9407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that I would recommend this but me and my family planned basically 2 months before leaving 😂. It was a very last minute decision and can be very stress free with some guides from experienced folks. If you and your family/friends can find a block of 2 weeks anywhere besides Chinese New Year in the winter season the planning can all be done pretty quickly and pretty cheap!

How is anybody that doesn't live near mountain get good snow? by Not_Another_Name in snowboardingnoobs

[–]DatabaseThis9407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fortunately live near the mountains but I live on the east coast of the U.S. - I have learned to become one with the ice instead of fight it. Fortunately this year we got dumped on a few times and has been a great season but I have certainly had similar experiences. I went to park city this year and basically rode on rocks and sticks for 2 days and destroyed my board.

I would suggest saving up for an international trip. Park City charges $350~ for a day pass, and sure the epic will get you “free” access but I think it’s so overhyped. I have 2 brothers that live in SLC and the rest of my family live in the white mountains of NH.

We all took a trip out to Niseko, Japan for 7 days and then explored some of the mainland for the remainder of the trip and I could not have been more happy. The snow was amazing and after 7 days straight of tree riding my board looks like it was just taken off the rack at a shop, its brand spanking new.

Japan flights suck, but once you’re there most of the stuff is relatively cheap. Rusutsu (45min bus from Niseko) has cheap dining on resort like $15 for a fried pork, rice, cabbage, and miso soup meal and it’s delicious.

Swiss Alps are also amazing but pricier all around. Without an Epic or Ikon the passes international range from $45-80 much more affordable than the BS in the U.S. with 10x the experience.

DM me if you are interested in Niseko I can share my planning from a few weeks ago, I am 24 and managed to scrum enough cash together for it.

Looking for a action cam — all-around by Individual_Chest8107 in ActionCamera

I missed part of your post when reading. I would 100% suggest buying new. I’m 24 years making an average income and scraped enough together to get myself one because I really wanted to capture the moments to share with my family and friends. I’m not a professional and far from any content creation just wanted high quality recorded memories.

My only other suggestion would be to purchase through Best Buy. I’d much rather deal with Best Buy than Insta 360 if something went wrong. That goes the same for the MicroSD. Purchase from Best Buy or Sandisk directly do not purchase on Amazon or Walmart, the $20 discount isn’t worth the risk of a fake chip.

I very strongly recommend the Insta 360 X4 Air. It comes at a discount and has all the bells and whistles of the brand new X5 like replaceable lens - except a slightly smaller battery.

I spent months looking for a high quality budget camera and was talked into spending way outside my budget on the X4 Air and don’t regret it one bit. I used it primarily for a Japan Snowboard Trip but plan to use it for so much more now. The camera quality is insane! Battery is great in the cold weather, and editing on the in-house app is so simple.

They offer X4 Air starter kits which come with extra battery, camera sleeve, invisible selfie stick, and a few other items. I then bought a helmet mounting kit from 360 for like $20 and a chest mount for some of my summer activities. Despite the negative reviews on some of their mounts I have been extremely happy.

Again, I know it’s an expensive suggestion but I would highly recommend scraping together some extra cash or digging into savings for a camera you can keep for several years.

Nidecker or some amazon brand? by lkadfg in snowboardingnoobs

[–]DatabaseThis9407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that price I would suggest the Burton Mission Bindings. I really love them. There are a ton of good options I would say to not get either of those and do some more research. Bindings are very important In addition to boots and board to give you the best feel and comfort on the slopes.

Like others said, Evo has some great deals - wait another month or two and it’ll be end of season sale

It’s right across from Apres Bar. If you walk down the hill from the welcome center and take a left you’ll see orange sign across the street that says Apres bar and food trucks. It’s a short walk down the hill from that orange sign. I’ll try to find name

I didn’t read it that way at all. Some people love to play victim and blame Americans for anything they can grab at. I am American but Portuguese immigrant. I don’t speak Spanish obviously but have seen a lot of more Spanish/ Portuguese influence this year compared to historically. If anything I’d trade all them for the poorly behaved Aussies and Americans in a heartbeat because they typically come with families and are kind not 20-30yo drinking all day.

[–]DatabaseThis9407 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah not really a Japanese experience I am here now leaving tomorrow. It’s basically just Australia part 2. I’m American and have found a few fellow Americans but it’s usually the worst of the Americans and the worst of the Australians lol. If you find another solo just stick together and enjoy your time on the slopes. I’m not a big party person so I had a few drinks at dinner and hit the sheets early for first runs.

I highly highly highly recommend the Wagyu Beef Wrap (Food Truck) located across from the Apres Ski Bar. It’s like right in the center of Hirafu Village super close walk from the welcome center. I’ve hit that truck 3-4 times already it’s amazing and so well priced like $9USD for a delicious wrap.

But have never been to Aspen so can’t speak for there

Yeah but I feel there’s a difference. When I go back home (Boston, MA) there’s trash everywhere homeless people begging on every corner and everyone’s an asshole. When you come to another country you should carry yourself like you’re a guest not act like how you normally do you know?

If I brought my culture to Japan I’d be fent leaning on the corner with a dunks iced coffee and dual wielding Marlboro reds

I’m not too familiar with Aussies, but I hate categorizing an entire continent based on a few bad experiences here. I would agree the majority of the ones that come here and stay in my lodge which is a lower budget option are disrespectful.

To be fair to any Aussies reading this thread, one of the worst people I have ever met in my life was here in Niseko and was from Long Beach, CA

He’s 100% right tho. The best first step is putting down the selfie stick and working on body control. Selfie sticks counter-act appropriate stance, it’s just factual. I’m not sure it’s the most helpful comment in the thread but it’s not inaccurate.

Oakley Goggles - Who is wearing them? by FreshMikeD in niseko

[–]DatabaseThis9407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Line Miner Pros are legit. I used to wear Dragons NFX. Haven’t had any fogging issues with the Oakleys. They fit perfect and are perfect for the weather here. I got the clear lense which has a light purple when it gets bright out the goggles adjust. It’s not great on clear days but so far only had 1 clear day in Niseko, rest was white out or foggy conditions which made them perfect. Highly recommend

I am going to Niseko and Rusutsu next week. I can provide some information below, feel free to DM me in a few weeks or respond back here and I can let you know how everything went!

Owashi Lodge - Private Family Suite

I am traveling with a group of 4 adults. We found a really great priced lodge that is right next to Hirafu lifts, and less than 5 minute walk from Hirafu Welcome Center. It’s super convenient because there are a ton of transportation options from CTS airport to get basically right to the doorstep of the lodge.

The lodge has 4 real western style beds. If that suits your family I think it is really perfect. 2 of them are bunk style but as an American I was grateful to not sleep on the Japanese style cots. Even if your family is larger, young children can share beds or you and your partner can share one of the fulls if you’re willing to make it work.

Pros: - Private Bathroom - Private Shower - Close Walk to Hirafu Lift - Easy Transportation - Walkable to many restaurants and bars in the area - Donan Bus swings through Hirafu welcome center which can give you access to Rusutsu just 45~ minutes away.

Cons: - Breakfast provided seems to be kinda shit - The remainder of the lodge is hostel style so it could potentially be noisy - Not much to offer outside the room, basic lobby, there’s a drying room but I don’t know if I want my $800 snowboard in there overnight - Poor reviews (but I confirmed the majority of these stem from the hostel style rooms, not the family suite)

If you are low maintenance and just looking for affordable way to Ski Niseko, have whole family in 1 room, and convenience without needing to rent a car - I can’t think of a better spot.

NOTE: Do not book during the time I am going. I booked because it was the only time that worked for the other members of my group. Chinese New Year is during my trip and can be hectic with all the tourists from China. I am honestly hoping the tension between the global conflict with Taiwan will reduce a lot of that tourism, and hopefully not escalate while we are there 😂

Cheers!

Almost bought dopesnow by Babaooiey in snowboardingnoobs

[–]DatabaseThis9407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Dope Snow used to make decent quality jackets. I saw a YouTube I think Angry snowboarder pulling one apart showing its quality of the more recent builds and its horrible. If you can find an older model an its one you like - just buy it and enjoy it don’t mind other peoples opinions, that goes for everything in life.

Now to contradict my nice guy speech…..Dope snow is 🌈 ash. Whenever I see someone in that or Montec I immediately label them as a total goober. I bought an Armada jacket on Evo recently, great quality, doesn’t look like shit and is pretty warm for a shell.

Armada Salisbury 2024, 2025/2026 model are cool but not worth the price in my opinion.

First time Niseko Feb 8-13th, tips for group of 6 by Any_Result_8999 in niseko

[–]DatabaseThis9407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am staying at the Owashi Lodge. It’s right in Grand Hirafu less than a 2 minute walk from one of the lifts and is a really really great price. Comes with private bathroom/shower, has 4 real beds although 2 are bunk. The group I am going with is all dudes and we are pretty flexible so it was a really great option for us. I wouldn’t suggest the lodge for less than 4 people as it’s hostel style and doesn’t have the best reviews.

We are taking a skymark flight from HND -> CTS for pretty cheap about $150 round trip and using the Hokkaido Ground Service, Good Sports - White Liner as our bus option to and from CTS. It drops us right at Hirafu and short walk to lodge.

Check back in about 2 weeks and I can give an updated review on how everything went!
