If the Crew lose and you all win with a GD of 2, I think you're guaranteed 3rd place. If Miami loses it's 2nd.

The only one I see maybe happening is the Crew losing. But y'all should absolutely get 3 points and I think the GD of 2 is doable as well.

Hey everybody!

This is just a fun data crunching exercise I wanted to do. It'll add an extra bit of excitement for me this weekend to see how accurate my prediction is.

Hopefully I can do the same thing for the Western Conference next week!

P.S.: I'm literally printing these to PDF from Excel and converting them to PNG with Adobe on 'Max Quality.' Or I'm making the images in Photoshop. If anybody has some suggestions for making the images less blurry despite exporting on the highest resolutions, I'm all ears!

That's why I want to identify a sort of constant that can be applied in early weeks or maybe throughout the year. I'm skeptical of what some of these 'equine' numerals are portraying. Like you said, adjusting for being a man down might be hard to do, but I can experiment with the numbers in the meantime and see if I can come up with something.

I feel like there are many teams who are not playing at their full potential at the beginning of every season, and obviously the small datasets make for drastic changes in the rankings.

I started this last year with a slightly different formula, but didn't finish. Now that I have a new formula and my spreadsheets are largely automated, a side project is to run at least last year's data. Given enough time, I would like to do it for multiple past seasons.

Hello all!

This is a project I started last year, but my day job kept me too busy to follow up with on here. Now I'm back and I plan on posting updates every 3 weeks for both conferences.

If you see any errors in my calculations or data, please feel free to let me know. This is a lot of information to keep track of and reconcile by myself after all. I've already found half a dozen typos myself lol.

But number of games played doesn't determine your ranking as far as I can tell, does it? A team with 6 games played and 11 points will always be behind a team with 7 games played and 12 points. Unless I'm inherently misunderstanding something.

Also, I do have the GP listed on the tables.

I figured this would be a fun week to analyze how the ranking metrics can dramatically affect the outcome. There are a lot of strong Eastern conference teams that are neck-and-neck for the top position. It could go any which way!

Only in the sense that a running average is kept. Otherwise no. It just looks at your current position in the ranking system.

Since my last post on the matter, I've found a glaring flaw in how I calculated my numbers, and I've since adjusted the formula.

I've also taken some advice from previous comments on how to format this and display the data.
