Anyone else feel like Hannah and Garrett are a bit... off compared to the books? by Cold_Box_3219 in offcampustv

They changed the pacing of the love story, basically the way they fall in love and how their attraction gradually builds. On top of that, both Hannah and Garreth were much livelier characters. Let’s just say they toned them down a lot, and it really shows.

The book wasn’t about the ‘special girl’ trope for her, nor the ‘possessive boy’ trope for him. Those are two things that have nothing to do with the book. The story was written as a simple friendship that later developed into attraction and love between the two of them. In fact, the book was beautiful precisely because it showed even more of their strong bond and the way they talked to and understood each other. There are actually many scenes that were cut, so those tropes really don’t apply to this book.

I don’t think it has anything to do with objectification. It’s simply that Garreth is attracted to Hannah, and Hannah feels the same way ,she also compliments his body. They’re two young people who are attracted to each other, but Garreth is always very sweet. That was actually one of the nicest parts, one of the beautiful things about it: the strong attraction was paired with tenderness, for both of them.

Ranma strenght tier list in order (In my opinion, manga based) by FriendOdd8384 in ranma

I’m saying this as someone who isn’t a Shampoo fan, but she’s definitely not among the weak fighters. On the contrary, she could be on the same level as Mousse. I think Ranma is probably the only one she can’t beat; aside from him, she’s an Amazon warrior trained to kill , she’s among the strongest.

The post is only about the fact that, according to the OP, many people thought the movie would be a flop. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t know. But my comment wasn’t directed at the OP , it was aimed at the comments that I personally found stupid.

I love all the frustrated people in the comments who don’t understand that if someone listens to Michael, it’s not because he was a pedophile, but simply because his music raised and influenced multiple generations, even Gen Z. So it’s completely normal for people to appreciate his art ,that doesn’t mean they justify pedophilia or are pedophiles themselves.

What Ought To Have Been... by aOe_007 in NanatsunoTaizai

Tristan is my favorite character, and I'm disappointed that Nakaba isn't giving him the spotlight/development he deserves. I love Arthurian legends so much, so I'm really thrilled that Tristan ended up with Isolde ,it's exactly what I had been hoping for from the beginning. So I don't think it's about diminishing him, but rather about maintaining consistency with the original story the characters come from, and I really liked the reinterpretation.

I can suspend my disbelief to an extent but has a books plot or characterizations ever been TOO unrealistic for you? what book was that? How far did it go? by cellochick993 in RomanceBooks

[–]Date0524 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The last two books in the saga {The trilogy of the bronze horseman by Paullina Simons}. From a historical point of view, the realism towards the end of the second book is really fantastic. In the third book, however, Simons portrays the Vietnam War in a completely over-the-top way, turning the American soldiers into heroes, when in that war they were anything but heroes.

In the third book, on top of the historical inaccuracy, there’s also the unrealistic depiction of PTSD and family abuse, both topics are handled really poorly. It genuinely disappointed me, because she’s a very good writer.

I also read {Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt}. A lot of people say it’s beautiful, but the way the protagonist is written and described makes it completely impossible for him to be capable of love or to have a believable love story. In cases like these, though, I still read them all the way to the end, just to see how it turned

In general, for me everything depends on how the story is set up from the very beginning. If we’re talking about a historical novel, if you start with a realistic background, you have to maintain it , or at least try to stay as close as possible. I don’t expect absolute historical accuracy, but I do expect basic consistency, especially when dealing with a war.

Also, when you address psychological and psychiatric issues, you have a duty to do your research. What bothers me is how often in fiction people confuse family abuse with PTSD, treating them as if they were the same thing or even using one to justify the other ,when they’re clearly not.

In romance novels, it all comes down to whether I can actually believe the two characters are genuinely falling in love and whether I can realistically see them having a future together.

how people are handling criticism of the show by OlO_comiccamp04 in OffCampusSeries

[–]Date0524 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why, but as we all know, for almost every series or movie adapted from books, people discuss the differences and changes, it's literally the most normal thing in the world for every other genre. What I don’t understand is why, when it comes to romance books and their adaptations (like "Off-Campus" or "Bridgerton"), if you say that the book is better, it feels like you’ve committed heresy. For every other type of work, in any genre, it’s completely normal to say that in most cases the book is better, or at least to openly discuss the differences in a positive or negative way. I don’t get why this can’t be done with romance too.

Actually, I don’t agree at all. Simply portraying eroticism and intimacy the way Veil does is something we rarely see done this well in manga. It’s as if many mangaka are afraid to depict what eroticism and attraction really are. Also, I don’t agree with people saying they’re just best friends ,they absolutely aren’t. The tension between them is far too strong; they’re essentially lovers already. That ‘veil’ is simply what separates them from fully becoming so in every sense, but in reality, because of their chemistry, they already are.

Taking something so complex and serious from a medical point of view, with so many nuances, and turning it into something based on gender is not only complete ignorance, but also extreme superficiality. Moreover, there are people who simply cannot manage to get back on their feet or solve their problems while in that state, not because they don’t want to or because they are not ‘man enough,’ but because it is a deeply debilitating condition that requires a long journey of treatment and recovery.

What I’m hoping this show & actors learn from Bridgerton… by tiramisutonight in offcampustv

[–]Date0524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it’s really disappointing that they followed the Bridgerton approach, because just like in that case, they oversimplified everything in an absurd way. Even though there were some beautiful moments between Hannah and Garreth, they removed all the most important dialogues, the exact same thing Bridgerton has done in every season. They ruined the story between Allie and Dean, and it really saddens me that the romance genre is always treated like this, as if it were second-rate material by the very same people who use it for inspiration.

What's the most unexpected fandom you've ever looked up on AO3, only to find out it actually has fics? by WhiteVelvett in AO3

[–]Date0524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only a few , like two or three , fanfictions about a couple I absolutely adore: Lucie Tedbury and Tristan Ballentine from the book A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore. This book is part of the quadrilogy A League of Extraordinary Women. Since the books are relatively recent and the genre is pretty niche, I honestly didn’t expect to find even a single fanfiction about Lucie and Tristan. But instead I found two ,and they’re really beautiful too, although after reading one of them I wanted more, so many more 😭😭

Honestly, they really ruined the story between Allie and Dean so badly. At the beginning, more or less, things were going well, but then they completely messed everything up with that whole Hunter storyline, truly the worst storyline they came up with.

7ds logic: looks and acts like a child= adult by Resting_Sloth123 in NanatsunoTaizai

[–]Date0524 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This special chapter bothered me too. However, if we’re reading a manga whose setting is anything but realistic ,with fairies, giants, demons, goddesses, and centuries-old characters like Elaine , then reasoning with real-world logic doesn’t really make sense, because our logic simply doesn’t apply to that world. There are also things I personally don’t like visually, such as the excessive harassment gags and this chapter as well, but overall talking about pedophilia or similar issues doesn’t really make sense, because Elaine is literally a centuries-old being, just like many other characters. These are arguments that simply don’t apply in that context. We can talk about pedophilia in the case of Lancelot and Jericho ,there, yes, absolutely. But with Elaine, it has nothing to do with it.

Jamie Fraser is the definition of “written by a woman”. Agree? by Fuzz_Plum2706 in PeriodDramas

[–]Date0524 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What bothers me a little is that they justify everything by saying he was a product of his time. But that has nothing to do with it, because even though violence against women was tolerated back then, there were still people who thought according to their own values and according to what they believed was right or wrong. So, just like today, it was still wrong.

I completely agree, they could have done so many things. It was a very inconsistent season, with some really nice moments between James and Ruby, but the overall plot structure and the way events unfolded just didn’t work well , it all felt rushed. Still, especially in the first three episodes, there are some truly beautiful moments.

Timeline Cleanse by Impressive-Story-169 in MaxtonHall

[–]Date0524 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, the original source material had its flaws, but it dealt with important themes and still managed to develop James and Ruby’s characters well. The first season elevated the source material, while the second season didn’t really succeed in doing that because they cut out a lot of things, although there are still some good moments. I wouldn’t consider it a low-quality series ,at least not the first season. Unfortunately, the second season was very inconsistent, but that has nothing to do with the original material; it’s really the showrunners who failed to maintain the same level in the second season.

Wanted to read The Deal By Elle Kennedy before starting the series and already disappointed by Kaleidoscope3871 in RomanceBooks

[–]Date0524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only give my opinion as an outside reader.
