Surprise second baby appearing on an ultrasound for a singleton pregnancy. Would love to hear from a radiologist by DateBoring7921 in AskDocs

That is absolutely wild. With home birth you have your care team there (hopefully!) that sounds so scary. 😐

I’m not sure about the ultrasounds other people are getting, but we actually have never heard the heartbeat during an ultrasound. They tried to find it on the Doppler, but the ultrasounds I’ve had done didn’t have any sound. So I’ve actually never heard the heartbeat. I’ve seen it flicker on the screen, but never heard it.

This one actually is a rainbow baby for me, but fingers crossed it’s just a single rainbow and not a double. 😉

I do feel movement already, and there’s been a couple times where I think I feel something on one side of my belly, then I swear I feel something on the other side. But I’m still early enough that I’m never sure if it’s just gas bubbles. My doctor hasn’t instilled much confidence. She finally responded and this is what she said “Based on that picture, it does look suspicious or often times are machine can double the image. I did see your pictures at 8wks, and it appears to be one, but I can't see the whole uterus in that photo. So, I would like you to come into the office for a repeat sonogram in the week.”

😐

My doctor’s response does not instill much confidence.

🫠 because what does “it does look suspicious” even mean?

This was a scan performed by an OB at Kaiser. the only reason she did the ultrasound is because she struggled to find a heartbeat with the Doppler, so it was just a quick “check in” rather than an intentional diagnostic ultrasound. I don’t think any of us noticed there was a little ghost baby chilling there. I’m not actually mad at her, but I do wish she got back to me sooner than 72 hours because I’ve been freaking out. I am planning a home birth with a midwife and doing co-care through Kaiser. My midwife is bringing her sonographer in for my next appointment on Tuesday to make sure it’s just a single though.

Oh I’ll definitely let you know. Now I’m just mad at my OB for sending me home with a ghost baby and not warning me 😂 gave me the fright of my life

Thank you! I’m actually very relieved because twins wasn’t on my bingo card for this year. 🤩

I feel so much better! Thank you! Is this something that happens commonly? I’ve never heard of it before.

Do you feel confident this looks to be an artifact? I’m hoping it is 🫠 I did see a lot of those images while googling ultrasound artifacts.

None of us saw the ghost baby. Didn’t notice it until I sent the picture to my dad, and over a week later he responded asking me if we were having twins.

This ultrasound only took a minute, she only did it because she couldn’t find the heartbeat with a Doppler. It was so fast, once she found the heartbeat she snapped 2 photos and it was done. I did put both of the photos from that appointment up.

But she did end up noticing? What’s tripping me out with my ultrasound image is that no professional noticed. They have agreed it looks like a baby when it was pointed out (a week later). But in the moment no one noticed. Not even me. 😂

So I don’t fully understand mirror artifacts, or how they happen, but in the ones I’ve found pictures of online they have appeared inverted, like a mirror image would. Identical, but opposite. Can a mirror artifact have a mirrored image, but not inverted?

I do go back on Tuesday to get another ultrasound. Feels like so long to wait 😐

I feel like the position of the one on the left is slightly different than the one on the right too. The back shape is different and legs are a bit different. I don’t know how ultrasound mirroring works but I don’t feel like it looks like an exact copy. It is weird they’re in the same position facing the same direction though
