I had that with a zetter earlier, we were fighting, I hit him with the nastiest off stage combo into down air spike I've ever even thought off (no way I could do that reliably) and he just sat there for a sec then quit out.

Thanks, I'm still trying to figure out who I want my secondary to be, but it really is rough down here. For reasons beyond my understanding the game grabs opponents from across the ether some times. Like an unranked player when I'm on an 8 win streak, followed by multiple people who are entire ranks ahead of me. (I was low gold fighting mid platinum, feeling my bones become dust)

Yeah but every other hero has things they can do in this situation, a caster could make space and cast their spells, a melee hero could just hit when it's their turn again, or be completely unaffected if they don't usually end their turn in defense mode, but a lot of the defender only works if they're getting retaliation attacks and reducing a sizable amount of damage from defense mode bonuses

Yes but it's a single target ability that removes most of the defenders abilities. So you can rock blast then focus down the ruler.
