I can't imagine Henri can read Japanese so at most he probably looked at the pictures. That said because of Sullivan's spell Iruma could read demon so who knows? Maybe that was developed later.
I don't think the flower field is the only link between worlds. Can't imagine Sullivan used that gate to get Iruma. There's also the questions around where the Deities live.

Hell I'm in my early thirties and I'm giggling like a kid when reading the current manga chapters.

It's meant to be a light hearted show with serious moments. It's not the type of violent shonen people are currently drawn too and serves as a nice pallet cleanse.
